Play movies on apple tv Plex app from android phone

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I just signed up for the Plex pass thinking this was an easy thing to do but I can’t figure it out. I have movies on my phone and I want to watch them in the Plex app on my apple tv. How do I upload/sync my phone contents to the Plex media server?

From the sound of it this is movies you have outside Plex stored on your Android phone?
Usually you would go to add those files to a folder that’s linked to a Plex library. With Plex, all the streaming comes from the Plex Media Server.
How to transfer it depends on how/where the media is stored on your phone. In some cases you can open it using some file explorer and transfer it to the server using a wired or wireless connection (e.g. USB connection, WIFI) – if the data is on a SD card you might also be able to transfer it by moving that card into your Plex Server.
After you copied the file(s) to the folder linked to the Plex Media Server library you might need to “scan library files” from within that Plex library.

Plex on your Android phone can also access some of the media that’s not on your server but stored locally on the phone. From what I could find, you cannot however cast/fling that media to another Plex app

So how do I go about doing a file transfer from my phone to my media server through wifi? Is that done through some service that’s outside of Plex?

Also, yes I’m unable to cast from my phone to any Plex app through the Plex app on my phone. It just says unable to connect every time that I try.

Thanks for your help

As I said… that depends on where the files are that you want to transfer.
I assume it’s files locally stored on your Android phone, e.g. on a SD card.

All information I could find for Android point to this support article – while it’s focusing on how to transfer files to your Android, I suppose the underlying approach will be the same to transfer files from your Android.
One way seems to be transferring the file via Google Drive.

Sorry yes they’re stored locally. I’m fairly aware of how to transfer files from my phone to my computer. It’s a pretty painful process and not something that I’m going to do on a regular basis to make this work. At that point it would be easier to just make sure these videos are on my computer instead of my phone to begin with.

I was hoping there was a transfer from phone via Plex app to computer Plex media server but it doesn’t sound like that exists. I really like the idea of this service but it doesn’t appear it’s setup quite right for my situation. I really just need the server on my phone and not my computer.

Also, is Plex media server solely cloud based? I downloaded and installed it on my PC but when I open it, it opens online. Where’s the software that was installed? I was expecting to open an installed app and not my browser.

The Plex Media Server is installed locally on your pc (or NAS etc.).
If you access it from within your home network, you’ll have a direct connection between the local server and the local client.

You can access Plex through a browser using http://127.0.0.1:32400/web if you’re on the same machine as the Plex Media Server; http://[PMS IP address]:32400/web otherwise. The “cloud” part you’re referring to is just a hosted version of the Plex web app (http://app.plex.tv/desktop). This is just the frontend that can interact with your local Plex Media Server if you have them both linked to the same Plex account.

There’s a nice support article / guide explaining how Plex works
