Play while recording?

A quick question about Plex recordingss:

is there a way to view a recording that started 15 minutes ago while it keeps recording until the end of the scheduled recording or do I have to wait 'til the end of the record to see it appear on the Plex system?

At this time you have to wait for the recording to complete. there have been multiple requests for this feature and I hope this is something that gets added myself.

I guess I’ll keep my Tablo for that type of use for now (especially for nightly news programs) that you schedule just so you can start watching it a few minutes after the starts.

I think they are getting closer. Lately I noticed that inside the .grab folder, they seem to be strategically chunking the recorded file which seems to me they are preparing to enable you to watch one of those chunks while another is still recording the rest of the show. Maybe I am reading into it but this is what I noticed.

I think it was late July/early August that a plex employee said they were working on this but it was a few months away

FYI I just did it (and it messed up my recording).

I’m new to the DVR. Upgraded today to PMS 1.9 on windows 10, setup my hdhomerun connect. Then I setup a recording scheduled for 19:00-19:30.

Around the 19:07 mark I started my ShieldTV (fully updated), went to the recording show and started watching. I was able to time-shift to skip a commercial before the show… Then watched for a few minutes. I then stopped playback to go take care of the kids… When I came back, I tried playing back the same show to do ish watching. I am now.able to watch the same portion I watched before, but whatever came afterwards wasn’t recorded… I guess stopping playback stopped the recording altogether. Sucks.

Logs included so the devs can try to see what happened.

I believe the way I made it happen is that I started the show that was recording through “playing now” , but since I could time-shift it seems to me it played the dvr-ed file

@keithah @BigWheel @OttoKerner not sure who to ping for DVR logs, but you guys posted the stickies
Any input?

This has happened to me twice. I’m using the HDHomeRun Connect so my assumption was that I could tune to the channel that was being recorded on the second tuner, but both times the recording failed.

@“MovieFan.Plex” can you see what the expected behavior is? Is it a big that we can tune a currently recording show (did it from the web interface)? Or is it a currently implemented feature? If it is implemented, then can you let the devs know it breaks the recording?

Thanks

The DVR and LiveTV features are separate. When watching LiveTV, the DVR will be independent and should continue to record regardless of what you do for LiveTV, i.e. timeshifting. Is it possible that your drive got full? LiveTV also saves temporarily onto your system, which is what allows timeshifting. If your drive became full, it would impact both LiveTV and the DVR. I haven’t looked at your logs yet, this is just a theory off the top of my head. I’ll review your PMS logs later and see if I notice any issues. What show/movie was this, so I can focus my search better.

Thanks. Really doubt the disk was full, but you never know with Transcoding, I guess.
Show is called district 31.

Maybe I’m looking at the wrong thing, but I see a recording scheduled from 19:00 until 19:30.

It looks to me like it recorded properly. This was S2E1.

Yup, exactly.

After I paused the live stream, when I came back to watch the recording it wouldn’t play past the point where I paused… As if the stream was empty.

Edit Unfortunately deleted the file… If/when it happens again then I’ll post it with logs I guess.

Oh, I guess I read your issue wrong. I thought the problem was that the recording failed when you tried to watch the Live version.

So the problem is just the Live stream? I’ll recheck your logs after you confirm.

Well, I’m not sure. It’s as if, when I stopped the live stream, it stopped recording the DVR file… But the file still got completed… But there was nothing to watch in it after the “stop”. Sorry if I can’t express it better.

I just want to be clear. AS I said, the DVR and LiveTV are independent You had a scheduled recording (DVR on tuner 1). At the same time you tried watching the same thing Live (LiveTV on tuner 2). You paused LiveTV and walked away. DVR finished recording the episode and it got added to your library. LiveTV failed for you and you could not finish watching what you had paused. Is this correct?

No. I scheduled a DVR of the show. Watched it live at the same time. Paused the live stream and walked away. Came back later (30mins? 1:00?), Tried to watch the DVR version to finish the show, but even if it said the show had recorded for 30mins, there were only 5:xx to be watched… I guess you could say the DVR version was corrupted after the point where I stopped watching live?

Ok thanks. I get it now. Let me see if I can reproduce.

I get the impression that Live TV can read the same file as a scheduled DVR recording. I’m using Windows Media Server 1.9.0.4252 (HDHomeRun Extend tuner) via an AFTV. With both tuners in use, I’m able to go to Live TV and start watching the one of the shows with DVR recording in progress. Every time you hit “watch” in Live TV it always goes to the beginning of the DVR recording but you can timeshift like a champ. The ability to watch a DVRed show while it is still recording is a key enhancement for me, but I can’t help but wonder if it’s related to other issues I’ve started having like recordings getting stuck at “recording 100% complete”:

It might be coincidence, but I’ve had almost no DVR issues until after Live TV feature was added to the AFTV in early September. I feel like my problems have often (or always) occurred sporadically after I watch a program via Live TV that is also a scheduled recording in the DVR.
