Playback and termination issues since upgrading to 1.40.2.8273 beta through 1.40.2.8395

Server Version#: plexmediaserver_1.40.2.8273 - plexmediaserver_1.40.2.8395
Player Version#: plex-web Version 4.128.1, Apple-tv 8.34 (8140)

Since upgrading to the 1.40.2.8273 beta through release I have had some persistent issues.

Issue 1: The server fails to terminate a stream after completion of the tv/movie/anime or if the show has been paused for more than 5 minutes.

The Dashboard continues to show episodes as if they are still being watched even though the stream has ended due to the show completing or the show paused for more than 5 minutes. I am attaching a screenshot showing a high number of streams being reported and a second screenshot of a lower number after I have restarted the server. The screenshots are moments apart.

Issue 2: Episodes/Movies ending mid-stream, sometime multiple times during a stream.

Episodes are terminating mid-stream. I have tried to see a pattern, but the I haven’t seen one. The termination appears random.

Issue 3: Mid-stream buffering/rubber banding, sometime multiple times during a stream.

Streams are buffering when I didn’t have the issue before. I know and understand that streams can and will buffer from time to time, but this is different. I am also not receiving any notification from the server that “Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video. Check your Network.”

Things I have tried:

  1. I have run PlexDBRepair (2 - automatic) to Check, Repair/Optimize, and Reindex Database.
  • This ran sucessfully without any error. The issues persisted after running this.
  1. I attempted to roll back to plexmediaserver_1.40.1.8227.
  • This was unsuccessful. I assume it was due to the DB upgrade.

At this point I would love to just roll it back the last release version before plexmediaserver_1.40.2.8395 so I can see if this is a software issue or a hardware issue. If I can get some help with that it would be much apricated. I am also attaching log (link because log is larger that allowed upload size) in case someone want to review them. @Oz0n3

Your Preferences.xml has LogNumFiles="10" set.
For most things, this isn’t needed. It’s why your ZIP file is too big for the forum.

DBRepair will not fix this in any way but, if you downgrade, can help you with the DB should it be needed.

I’m seeing errors in PMS 1.40.2 logs about converting time (std::tm)

I recommend backing down to see if you can correct this by downgrading, release at a time, until you find one which works.

Before you embark on this, I urge: Stop PMS and make a tarball backup of the “Databases” directory in its entirety for safe keeping

I didn’t mention this before, but thought I would call it out incase it changes how thing somehow, but I am using an override configuration file.

I have tried replacing with older databases (one from 4/10 and another from 4/14) and running version 1.40.0.7998-c29d4c0c8 and 1.40.1.8227-c0dd5a73e against them. I attempt to start them and then check with status where I see this error.

Apr 20 12:55:09 hermes systemd[1]: plexmediaserver.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.
Apr 20 12:55:09 hermes systemd[1]: Failed to start Plex Media Server.

Looking through Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs/Plex\ Media\ Server.log I see this error

ERROR - Error: Unable to set up server: std::bad_cast (St8bad_cast)

I was able to get plexmediaserver_1.40.2.8395 running again, but it still suffers from the same problem.

I am mainly concerned with keeping my watch history for myself and my family member I share with. Is there an easy way to export the watch list and import it back into a new installation? If can do that easily then I can just re-install everything.

May I have the ZIP file which prevented PMS from starting?

That’s definitely something I need to write up and submit

There should be no “Unable to set up server” messages

Sure here is the latests logs

@Oz0n3

Issue submitted.

Thanks for the logs.
Please leave these logs here. I’ve referenced them in the ticket.

@Oz0n3

Got feedback from the dev.

He needs two things:

  1. Restart PMS
  2. Recreate the problem immediately (no other playbacks, etc)
  3. Capture those logs
  4. Confirm the “bad cast” is in there.
  5. Get the databases

He wants to see both DB and logs.

I will open a PM for you if desired

Yes, Please let’s take this to DM’s.
