Playback choppy only on Plex Desktop Player for Mac

Playback is extremely choppy since a few months (Plex user for a few years, never had any issues), and player starts freezing as soon as a video is played on Mac app. Same video plays fine using a browser or Mac HTPC app. I mostly use Plex on Apple TV so never got around to pinpointing an update that may have caused this.
Everything is on a local network, and Plex is configured to not transcode on local network.
I am using a macbook pro 2020 i5 1.4, 16 Gb.
I have deleted and reinstalled the Plex on MAC app, but that hasn’t helped.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
