Playback Error Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error

Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654
Player Version#: 1.64.2.3546-5107ec40

My son showed me how to download TV shows he had on his server. I just found out they will not play. I get this: Playback Error Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error. What does this mean? What do I do to make them play? I am not sure what TAG this was supposed to be on. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Did you actually download the show and trying to watch the Downloaded copy or are you trying to watch from his server. It sounds like the latter and if so, likely an issue on your son’s server. Check with him.

I downloaded it from his server. My wife wanted to watch them but does not understand how to watch from his server. The only way I could get it to play I had to convert the file with Handbrake. I do not think I should have to do that. There has to be something set wrong.

I’m confused on exactly what you did. Can you provide specific steps?

When you Download a movie from your son, there should be a “Download” section in the Plex app you used. Click there, then you see all the things you downloaded. Click on what you want to play.

You said: When you Download a movie from your son, there should be a “Download” section in the Plex app you used. Click there, then you see all the things you downloaded. Click on what you want to play.

That is all correct except when I click on what to play that is when I get the error Playback Error Conversion failed.

Not sure but I think I figured it out. The files I had for that TV show were MKV files. He just added the next episode and that one played ok. That file was an MP4, so I used Handbrake to convert the files to MP4 and now all will play. Does that make any sense to you? Is there any reason MKV will not play?

The Desktop app should be able to play mkv files just fine.

Can you reproduce the playback error, then grab the logs for me.

I was not sure what file you wanted so I included all 6 files. I have 9 TV shows 8 will not play and the last one #9 did start playing.

I see the failure, but I’m not sure what’s causing it. I’m checking with the team.

Thank You. Can I ask another question about downloading? This download problem was for TV shows. I downloaded a movie from my son and his file size file, is, for example, a GB but the file that downloaded size is an MB. My son said in Plex for Windows—Downloads to set the Music and Video at the Original Quality. I am not getting the quality that he has, it says what I am getting is Standard Definition. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?
Thanks

Can you provide a screenshot of what you do see? These should be a drop down and you can pick what you want.

That’s the correct options. Can you download another video and get me the log after it’s been working for about 1 minute. I need the start of the process, not the end.

What do I need to send to you? The same 6 logs?

The logs contain:

Feb 27, 2023 10:19:14.560 [4708] WARN - [MPVEngine/mpv] ffmpeg: http: HTTP error 404 Not Found
Feb 27, 2023 10:19:14.560 [4708] ERROR - [MPVEngine/mpv] stream: Failed to open http://127.0.0.1:32700/media/providers/3/library/parts/1/1676836527/file.mkv…

This means the file itself was not found. Likely it was deleted.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/windows-mac-app-logs/ mentions logs related to downloads and these would likely state if the media file is present.

Plex Media Server.4.log (243.2 KB)
Plex Media Server.5.log (539.9 KB)

I did not see what you were looking for. I hope this is what you wanted.

One of the logs contained an example:

Feb 27, 2023 12:47:59.272 [13212] DEBUG - Request: [127.0.0.1:54476 (Loopback)] GET /media/providers/3/library/parts/12/1676842249/file.mkv (8 live) #433 Token () (range: bytes=0-)
Feb 27, 2023 12:47:59.273 [13212] ERROR - Couldn't find the file to stream: C:\Users\david\AppData\Local\Plex\Plex Media Server\Sync\3\2\Top Gun Maverick (2022)\Top Gun Maverick (2022).mkv

This is indicating that the file isn’t present. Is this actually the case? Was this file deleted? If so, you will likely need to go to the download section, remove the download and re-add it so that it will grab it again.

P.S. It is better to upload logs as a single zip file rather than individual files. It’s smaller and more convenient to search for relevant log entries.

@treasuredphotos I need the plex.log after you try the download again. What you provided are the wrong ones. Please just zip the entire log folder and send that.

I started the download on 3/1/2023 and I believe at 16:45 or 46 I am not sure if it says the name of the movie is Big Jake a John Wayne movie.

Forgot to add this: On my son’s server, the Get Info says 7.06GB the download on my computer says the size is 3.99MB
