I’m having the same problem, video is loaded and screen remains black.
I used to have to set ‘Enable New Video Player’ to OFF, but that option seems to have disappeared.
There is a problem with the 8.12 release and it has been pulled. See announcement thread below.
I have not seen any posts about reverting to an earlier version. I imagine Plex will push out the fix as quick as possible should it prove stable

The version shown in the Google Play store is 8.11.0.22186, updated 26 Jan.
Try uninstalling then re-installing the app.
That should get you back to 8.11.
Always been the case, they don’t bother optimizing Plex for us.
Try Kodi with Plex addon for an instant playback, but then you’ll have another new problem, hit pause, hit play, the video start but not the audio, so you lose like 5-10~ secs of dialogue…
I’m gonna ditch all this for Emby if they can do it better I think.
PS: I guess adding 2D useless ■■■■■■ arcade is more important than making a media player actually play files perfectly on every popular platform.
Same issue here with Sony Bravia. Videos freeze on start up with a black screen. Tried reinstalling, no change.
I can also report! Black screen when I try to playback hd video. Nether original quality nor transcoded works…
Reinstalling didn’t work, It still shows version 8.12…
