[REOCCURRING 8.12.2] The Android APP on my TV does not Work, but the Cast option does

Hello guys,

Sorry I am quite new here, I managed to set up my first plex server this weekend, everything worked fine.

Tonight, most of the medias are not playing if I try to launch the from the plex Android app on my Smart TV.
The playback works on my laptop, my phone, and even … if I cast on my Smart TV.
Just the native android app seems to have an issue.

Nothing happens, I see a loading screen and then an error message (In french), that roughly translates to :

“An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”

I made two tests and extracted the logs.
I tried to follow the general rules of the forum and waited 3 minutes before each tests.

Test 1 : (With timestamps)
22:47 : Sever restart
22:50 : I start the “problematic media” on the PLex App of my Android TV
:x: KO Does not work

22:55 : I start the “problematic media” on my phone, and cast it to the CAST of the TV

The weird thing is that I have some media that are working on the native android plex app of the TV.
Here is a test :

Test 3 : (Withtimestamps)
23:08 : Server Restart
23:11 : I start an “OK media” on the Plex App of my Android TV

It’s not just you, I have 2 Sony Bravia TV’s that started doing this crap since last night. Watched a movie and several tv shows on each tv yesterday, did them all just fine, and today I’ve got the same problem you do.

Nearly the exact same problem, word for word. A few titles work, but most things no.

EDIT: To be clear the player on my android phone, PC’s, everywhere else works fine, just not the android app on the TV.

There is a problem with the 8.12 release. Plex has withdrawn it from distribution. See announcement thread.

Check the version in the Google Play store. If it shows 8.11 you can uninstall/re-install to fall back.

Wow… I feel so freaking useless now.
Lost 40 minutes yesterday doing all my tests and extracting my logs.

Hope it does not happen so often on Plex.

App re-installed, everything works… for now

It was working great until the updates came through and now all videos, including those I’ve already watch via plex, stutter without audio on the Sony TV… Video’s work on desktop and my phone.

Version is 8.12 installed, but can’t rallback, since in android tv app store version is same.
So what can I do here?
Very frustrating (

Go to the app store and uninstall the app.
Take a break, stop the tv, do whatever you want :smiley:
And re-install it again.

Me too, the first few times that I tried to uninstall / re-install… I was doing it too fast and something, somewhere, was caching the app… and I was always re-installing the 8.12

i did that, of course. turned off tv completely (pull the plug) after deletion of the app.
but it does not matter, they have on play store version 8.12.2, which is broken, as we all see.
so i cant download any other version from stor.

Same here, I fixed it the other day by uninstalling 8.12 and reinstalling 8.11 but now it’s updated again to 8.12 and it’s still crashing when trying to play videos. Play store only has 8.12, so now I have to track down an old 8.11 apk and sideload just to watch tv. Plex is really going down hill. They used to do TV super well but now they’re trying to get involved in too many other things and it’s destroying their core business. No one wants the retro games, there are already countless ways to do that cheaper. So stop braking everyone’s tv to add features no one is asking for.

I’ve got similar problem with Sony android tv app it seems to be anything with dts audio is causing me to get the error message, same files are working fine on Nvidia shield go figure.

I now have the 8.12.2.22756 and the problem is present again.

I have a smart TV that restrict installing apk from other sources…

What is this ?
I am using Plex since 2 weeks, and I already had 10 days down.

This is so idiotic, they should have pushed 8.11 again with a higher versioncode so everyone can get the fix without jumping through hoops…

Hey guys, I am very sorry you continue to experience problems with 8.12.2.
We stopped the 8.12.2 release until we figure it out in all cases, but for that we need your help, as we are unable to reproduce.
Could we get a sample for the media that fails for you: Generating Sample Files from Media | Plex Support, or even the metadata from PMS.

Same problem here, but I really do not understand where I can download an older versions for Sony bravia Android TV, maybe the 8.11. is there someone here that have downloaded it? Yesterday I tried to uninstall/installa several times but nothing.

You can get 8.11 From the release Thread:
