Playback issues with Live TV

Just bought my HDHomerunConnect Prime and connected to my Plex server. I am getting some pretty bad playback issues (mostly when trying to view HD) where the video stops and starts constantly on my mobile phone (Pixel running Anrdoid 8.0). I’ve also tried on my wife’s iPhone and the same issue is experienced there as well. These issues are experienced on the same local home network as well as on my mobile network when outside of the house.

If I select the option to “Display information overlay” from the Plex app on my phone, I see the message “Unable to Direct Play as MPEG2VIDEO is not supported on this device”.

I can see the transcoding service running on my server, and it’s not overutilizing the PC by any means (highest peak was 25% utilization). So I’m wondering why, if the server is transcoding, is it not transcoding it to a file type that is compatible with the mobile phone?

If anyone has any tips to provide me to get mobile streaming for live TV to be functional it would be much appreciated.

Is your Plex server hard wired ? Or wireless ? What was the client set to for video quality for local networks?

Have you tried this Channel Plug-in for comparison?

@srjinatl … Hard wired to a gigabit switch. Local quality playback is set to “maximum”, but that shouldn’t be an issue on a local network. Connection speed over my wireless router are 800Mbps+

@ChrisAWallace no I haven’t tried that yet. I’ll give it a whirl.

Ok how about the client advanced settings - particularly the direct streaming option. Do you have that turned on?

@srjinatl I have tried it with the direct streaming both on and off… same results.

@ChrisAWallace Looks like it does it even when using the sweet channel plugin (Plex should take note of the feature available from the plugin). I posted in the discussion the channel developer has going, but if you have any other ideas I’d love to hear them.

Plex Media Server Log Files & HDHRViewerV2 Log Files are attached
Server Operating System : Windows 10 Pro
Server CPU : Intel Core i7-770T CPU @ 2.0GHz
HDHomeRun Model/Firmware : HDHomeRun Prime / Firmware 20170815
Is this a new installation or upgrade? What was upgraded? New Install
Issues with Streaming, Channel Guide or other? Streaming issues, stutters a lot, stops after a few seconds of playback, or doesn’t even play at all
Is there any error message? Seems to alternate between “Server is not powerful enough…” and “Your connection to the server is not fast enough…”, but I have also seen “Conversion failed. The transcoder crashed or failed to start up.”
Have you successfully run on another other Clients? no

Are you trying to stream locally on your network, or remotely? Locally
What are you Player Online Streaming Quality? Internet streaming is set to 4Mbps, 720p. Home streaming has been toggled between 2Mbps, 720 all the up to “Maximum”
Client: Google Pixel running Android 8.0 as well as Windows 10 pro (Edge)

Update:

It looks like the issue only occurs with channels using MPEG2 instead of h.264. The AC3 audio codec appears to be irrelevant even though it needs to be transcoded as well.

Uninstall / reinstall of PMS appears to have resolved issue. I will continue to test and verify for sure.

Nope… uninstall and reinstall did nothing. Further evaluation of the logs shows a lot of the errors below. I understand that the live TV needs to be transcoded, but it seems like the transcoder just craps out during live TV. It can actually transcode the DVR just fine for the most part (some recordings occasionally fail though). It doesn’t have to do with high CPU utilization. I’ve watched it during a live TV session and the transcoder never passes 20% utilization.

Also still don’t understand why it worked so well remotely from my work Wi-Fi today yet on my home network it’s now failing again.

Did you ever find a fix/workaround for this? I’m seeing these same errors about “exponent X is out-of-range”.

It was either an issue with the HDHomeRun or Comcast. I ended up returning the original HDHomeRun I had purchased and a few weeks later we had an issue with our Comcast TV service where they needed to come out and install some sort of filter. I then purchased another HDHomeRun a few weeks later and haven’t had issues since.
