Playback Limit

Ok. So I have media that I wish to share to family, such as my mother, who is attempting to view such media on an iPad. Bear with me, as I know nothing of iOS (nor anticipate it anytime soon). This is the message she gets when attempting to do so:

"Playback limit

You can use this app for fress as a Plex remote control. You can also fling media to other Plex apps, including photos and videos on this iPad.

If you want to stream media to this iPad, you can activate [sic] with a one-time in-app purchase. You can also sign in as a Plex Pass subscriber. Otherwise, playback is limited to one minute."

Would anyone familiar with Plex for iOS help me on this one. I am just about the most iOS ignorant individual you’ll come across.

I’m sincerely hoping the issue isn’t that she isn’t a Plex Pass holder, because, I could have sworn when I got my Plex Pass, it was so that I could stream to family/friends (depending on media), regardless of their ‘membership’ level. Hoping that is still the case, I’m left currently assuming it’s because she didn’t pay for the actual app? (I didn’t know apps had a trial, so perhaps, that’s exactly the case? I dunno).

Appreciate any help.

The Plex app for iOS is not free.
When you download and install it, it is in test mode with playback limited to 1 minute. It then displayss the message you cited above.

2 options:

  1. your mom buys the app for a one-off fee to unlock it

  2. If your mom is a ‘managed user’ in your Plex Home, you sign the app into your plex account. Then it gets unlocked automatically, since you have a Plex Pass. (Afterwards, you use ‘fast user switching’ to switch to the ‘managed user’ your mom has in your Plex Home. )

If your mom has her own plex.tv account, you invite her account into your Plex Home

She has her own plex.tv account. She is only a “friend” and not in the home. Since it’s been some 20 years since I’ve lived with her, adding her to the home and having her use my account would feel wrong to me. I didn’t realize there was a test/trial download anymore. So, that answers that. Moms is being a tight wad! lol… no, knowing her (she is so IT illiterate it’s frustrating) and with me knowing nothing of iOS, it truly is a case of the blind leading the blind.

I’ll just hope for the best and tell her to actually BUY the app. Maybe she got confused when I told her “you dont have to buy a plex pass.” Appreciate the heads up of just what that message meant.

Keep in mind that buying the app is not subscribing to a Plex Pass!
Just wanted to emphasize this distinction.

Ok, now I’m back to confusion…

Is the message she received due to the app being a trial version or because she isn’t a Plex Pass holder? I thought I knew the difference, however, with the reiteration that buying the app is not the same as buying a Plex Pass (which, I already knew) when it didn’t “feel” necessary… leads me to believe she needs to be a Plex Pass holder now to watch media from my server, when -I- am a Plex Pass holder.

Sorry to keep this ping ponging, however, I deal best with binary answers I suppose.

No, definitely not.

If there are still some things unclear after reading https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/202526943-Plex-Free-vs-Paid feel free to ask.

@hexluther if your mother does not have plex pass, the he has to buy that ios or app from win store in order to use it …is like 2£ one time fee, or you can use free app on a tv or plex media player for windows

that message is because of a trial, so you can buy the app one time fee (or buy monthly pass and i dont this that will worth for your mother)
