Playback no longer works on Hisense 55U8N Android app

Server Version: 1.41.8.9834
Player Version: 10.28.0.3441

Somewhat suddenly, my Android TV is no longer able to playback anything at all from my plex server. I did an update to the latest version of PMS and that resolved it for a night, however it reverted back to it’s previous behaviour. When attempting playback, it simply loads a black screen and never actually plays the content. It buffers it and loads to the TV, as evident by the network graph on the server. I have tried force closing the app, reinstalling it, clearing cache, etc.

When looking at the logs for the server, it shows this line over and over again, with the port number incrementing each time:

Jun 12, 2025 18:45:29.537 [1956] DEBUG - CERT: incomplete TLS handshake from [::ffff:10.0.0.172]:37070: sslv3 alert certificate unknown (SSL routines)

I saw someone mention to clear the cache folder on the server, so I did that to no avail.

I activated the logging on the android app, as well as made sure both server and app accepted insecure connections.

The logging in the android app didn’t seem to provide any kind of useful information except for this line:

06-12 21:46:40.695 e: An exception occurred: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: invalid version format: ï¾ ï¾³S￝ETネ*L3\ï¿‹)>ニᄐ￱ᆲ"X"￶XW’6{゙ ZZï¿€+ï¿€/ï¿€,ï¿€0ᅩ로ᄄ￀ï¿€ワン/53JJ- ï¿¿DᅪH2+a↑↑#3￯■↑↑↓ï¿€Fï¿’Tノᆲニᅵ꾀ᄉᄂマJモᅢᄉ!ムXï¾” 0ï¿’Xï¿°8 ネ￉PK H

which, yes, that is exactly what is listed in the log. To be clear, no media currently plays. But the content we’ve been trying to play as not been transcoding, just direct play on the device. I’m not sure if there was an Android TV app update or if I have something wrong with my network, but playing on the web client and on a regular android device both work. All of this is played locally, as well.

Casting from Android works as well, but I suspect the issue lies in the actual Android TV app itself.
