Playback quality on both my Android TV (VU 55-OA) and Mobile (Redmi Note 8 Pro) isdefaulting to SD due to some unknown reason. Everything is default. My transcoder has no issues whatsoever. I got an error initially though on both my tv and phone saying that I am accessing outside my home server therefore the fallback in quality is imminent (but to my surprise it is forcefully throttling to SD 320p and even 240p despite of my 50+ Megs internet) which isn’t true as both the tv and phone are always connected to the same network as my PC. Please help. There are only these three available qualities viz. Convert Automatically, 320p and 240p on both TV and phone. This is by far, the weirdest behaviour that I’ve encountered with my Plex server!
Does Plex recognize those connections as remote (even if the Android TV should actually be in your local home network; could be different subnets or network restrictions/firewall settings)?
I’m not sure of that but I guess so. As a matter of fact I updated my Windows to 2004 version today and I used Plex on tv and mobile after a while once the update was finished. I don’t think there’s any issue with my firewall or security restrictions but again, I’m not sure as I just updated Windows.
you can confirm/verify how the playback is perceived by Plex on the Now Playing section of the Plex Dashboard (on the details it’ll show the playback as local, remote or indirect)
Any changes to your overall setup as part of the update to Win10 2004?
(does your server e.g. still have the same IP reservation in your router config?)
“indirect” means the client could not establish a direct connection to your Plex Media Server and the communication is relayed through some server of Plex. Those indirect connections are restricted to 1 Mbit/s (2 Mbit/s for Plex Pass users).
Best check if there’s a manual included or if you can find one for that specific model
It’s not super likely that this is caused by your recent update of the PMS.
However… it could be (e.g. if the Windows machine no longer has an IP reservation)
@tom80H DHCP is enabled in my LAN settings and as you can clearly see there are distinct (DHCP Start and End) IP addresses and they are different from my primary LAN IP Address.
@tom80H Oh hey I just discovered that I was using Docker for my Pi Node and there’s this HyperV ethernet adapter installed as my new network. Could that be an obstacle in this indirect playback conflict?
@tom80H Someone experienced this same indirect playback issue but even this thread doesn’t say much. Please help me regain full direct playback once again.
Hi All - My first post.
After recently purchasing an LG Smart TV I recently replaced Kodi which was running fine using SAMBA and Serviio on my Home PC (Win 7) connecting to an Android box running Kodi and connected to my old TV.
I am now using Plex Media Server on the PC with the Plex app running on the LG TV.
I have had an issue since with poor playback quality. MY PC says it is running a Secure connection with Plex.
MY LG TV says it has an INDIRECT connection with my server which I believe is the issue.
My current setup is as follows:
A TP-LINK USB Wifi connection on my PC with a 5GHz WiFi connection to my Router (a ZTE).
I have opened port 32400 on the router and set static addresses in the same network submask for both the TV and the PC.
The LGTV is also connected to the 5GHz WiFi connection on the router.
I can ping and see the TV from other devices however, I cannot ping the PC from itself (General Error) or other devices connected nor can I see the other devices apart from the router/Internet connection from the Network and Sharing Centre on the PC
My PC network adapter is running both IPv4 and IPv6
I have flushed the DNS cache and tried various methods such as disabling disabling the firewall on the PC and my antivirus (BitDefender free).
This is proving very frustrating and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions I believe it is likely something to do the the PC config or it’s network setup but not sure where to go from here?
Probably a different issue…
Can you double check and confirm that both devices use those static IP addresses on the same subnet? (e.g. no differing IP assignments from the TP-Link and the ZTE router)
You should not need a remote connection to play media within your home network. That implies the Plex server and client cannot see each other.
Other possible causes could be blocked ports within your home network (e.g. based on a firewall) or if you have assigned local IP addresses that are not compliant with RFC 1918.
@tom80H Thanks for the info. I can confirm both devices are using their respective static IP addresses on the same subnet mask (mine is also set to 255.255.255.0. These were set at the Router. As you say the issue is my Plex Server and other clients cannot see each other.
My router firewall does not appear to have any settings that should impact me. I can see other devices in the network but my PC appears isolated from my other devices and it will not ping itself either. I expect it is a config issue with my PC or the TP-link USB WiFi dongle I am using (which is new) but who knows what setting/s it may be?
Internet access from the PC is fine. I have Nord VPN on my PC but it is not active when using Plex?
Using my WIN7 setup I know the basics of checking the firewall settings, but not sure what to do to check for specifically blocked ports? Can you provide more guidance here?
I would expect my local IP Addresses are compliant with RFC 1918 as that was set a long time ago( in the 90’s I believe?).
cheers, Andrew
