Playback stopping, either Network too slow or your server is too slow - neither is true

Hi,

My plex server is a i5 6600K with 16gb of ram, and my playback device is a ATV4.

I’m sometimes running into that playback stops and “Network is too slow” or “Your server is too slow” appears on the screen, however neither is actually true so i’m a bit baffled.

The ATV is getting around 300-400mbps connection via Wifi, and the server is connected to the local network with a1 GBps ethernet.

I also have been monitoring the status on the server and CPU usage is not at 100% when this occurs, and the video file is usually transcoded 2-5% ahead of current playback time.

Any ideas?

Server is running on Win10 and version 1.7.5.4035

I’m having the same issue lately. Linux server (1.7.5.4035) running on an ubuntu server 16.04 VM in ESXi… on an 8-core Xeon E5-2630L V3, 32GB, media on RAIDz2 over wired gigabit ethernet. System is pretty beefy and never had any issues with plex for the last year it’s been online.

Last night nobody (remotely) could use my server, not even me (LAN). Rebooted my entire hypervisor to rule out any outside issues… still kept happening.

Movies would start buffering a little here and there, and then it would eventually grind to a halt and I couldn’t continue watching at all. Got the “network is too slow” message multiple times.

I have a similar kind of deal as you arcooke (dual quad core xeon with 32gb only running win 10 in a hyper-v vm on server 2012. Data is on freenas, ZFS partition on a second computer) I get this message periodically as well. I don’t know what it’s doing but that is definitely an erroneous error.

The thing will live encode .h265 to native plex format and play it but then when you play random 720 it blips with that error.

its 1.7.5.4035, this update is the worst ever. ruined my entire plex system. had the same playback error, now my accounts are renamed somehow on their own and nothing will link to my server, none of my other accounts link anymore. they need to roll back this version and send plexians something for the hassle.

Downgraded to 1.5.5 and all is good again… with 1.7.x I have all kinds of trouble… deadlocks, plex unable to delete old transcoded sessions as python is still using the files for some reason, random messages with server unavilable, not fast enough and random slow query to the datebase… everything feels sluggish and random… been back and forth between 1.7.x and 1.5.5 a few times now and it’s the same every time… staying on 1.5.5 during my upcoming 2 week holiday…

can you send me a link to 1.5.5 or how did you do it? very frustrated myself and want to go back to version that worked please. thanks in advance.

Also having the same issue with the “Network connection is too slow” and “The server is not powerful enough to transcode”. My entire network is gigabit and wifi is wide-channel N (150Mbps). The server is a dual Xeon Quad Core with 24GB RAM.

Bump. .

To ALL here:

This thread was brought to my attention so am going to do what I can but please understand I’m not a Windows guy. “Windows” are what my house and car have

A. AFAIK, PMS keeps the 3 most recent versions stored on your machine for you to go back to. I don’t know where it’s stored. Someone jump in please? If you pull those installers out, again AFAIK, uninstall the executable and reinstall the lower/older version. As long as you don’t delete your Library, everything will be fine.

B Regarding these errors, we need to see what it’s doing / not doing.

Specificially,

  1. Recreate the event (Without Verbose logging)
  2. Wait 20 seconds
  3. Settings - Server - Help - Download logs
  4. Obtain the XML (hover over the item attempted, Get Info → View XML). Use “Code” paragraph formatting ^^ above the reply/post box to keep the forum from eating it.

Without XML and Logs demonstrating/capturing what’s happening, there’s nothing actionable we/I can do.

IF it’s bad media or permissions or something universal, I can help. If it’s something Windows -specific, you’re outside my skill set (My focus is Linux and NAS… with some embedded)

For proper coordination with other team member, I’m going to move this thread to the Windows forum at some point. If you have email notification on or “Bookmark” the thread, you’ll have quick access to it. (The discussion number doesn’t change when moved )

I’ll wait a while before moving

I am starting to regret my purchase of Plex Pass.
I was working fine until about 2 or 3 moths ago. I keep getting “Server to slow …” I have stopped using Plex Server. I am using ARCHOS instead. Unless some one out their can tell me why it is not working, I will; have to forget the money spent and go on to something that does work.

Hardware? Not the problem
LAN speed - Gigabit Ethernet
Fire TV - 2gen
Hitachi - 4K ready

It all worked fine on my PC Win 8.1. Thais videos, music, pictures that reside on the PC. So, this is this is an urgent call for help!

Rick,

I’ve been on vacation since I last ran into this, I’ll try to recreate as soon as possible and post logs.

Rick,

Rick,
As this is your first post, normal debug procedure is to recreate an issue, collect the log files using Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs and next attaching that ZIP here. If the issue is playback, which yours appears to be, the XML (Hover over item → Get Info → View XML), pasted inline here, using “Code” paragraph formatting at the top of the reply window to prevent the forum from obscuring it, is the most helpful.
A claim of “I am starting to regret my purchase of Plex Pass.”, while it does reflect your feelings, doesn’t give me anything actionable to fix.

If you can help me, I’ll do my best to help you and you’ll be back to enjoying everything you have.

I will also point out, purchasing a Plex Pass doesn’t change PMS’s core operation. It enabled displaying the extra features which are already in the software you’ve been running.

@ChuckPA

This exact problem seemed to stop happening, but I’m running into another one thats almost identical:
