Hello, recently–say the last couple of weeks–my Plex Media Server has been really slow in serving media. This was happening with version 1.5.5 and I just upgraded to 1.6.1.3722 and it’s the same issue. I’m sustaining roughly 1.0-1.5 MB/s, which is really not fast enough to watch a movie. My server’s bandwidth is capable of 30+ MB/s and I’ve tested it to make sure. Help?
There are a lot of factors which influence what you’re asserting.
It’s like me saying… My car can do 150 mph but now only does 10 mph. What nobody thought to check was whether the tires were flat, I had decent gasoline in it, and all the spark plugs were firing right.
Point being, Let’s collect some data:
- See what PMS is trying to play back (XML of the content being played)
- Reproduce the condition (just enough to allow 10 seconds worth into the log files )
- Stop playback
- Wait 15 seconds
- Go to settings - server - help - download logs
- Attach the ZIP file here with your next post (attach function ^^ or just drag & drop to upload)
Yes, you’re right, but I had to start the conversation somewhere!
Attached are the XML file of the media being played and the ZIP of the log files.
Note that it took over a minute to initially play back, and then started to buffer about three minutes in. As instructed I let that go for about 10-15 seconds.
Thanks!
It’s clearly not the CPU.

This shows it’s transcoding at 11.9x realtime need .
When the CPU is that far ahead the next item on the list is networking.
Make sure you don’t have “Jumbo Frames” or “MTU > 1500” in your network settings. These will cause such a colossal slowdown like this.
