Plex server will not play any titles

I’ll try this again… I’ve used my MyCloudEX2 server for about 18 months with no issue but starting about a year ago I cannot get anything to play on any device.

The error I’ve received says something to the effect of the network or server being slow… blah blah blah… But it worked flawlessly for over a year…

I’ve tested speed tests both wired and wireless and can pull external speeds of 175Mbps and more internally from the NAS in question.

I can easily play movies from the same server using something like Kodi or the windows network, so I know that it can be done…

I’ve spun up a server instance on my gaming machine with and i7 and large enough video card and I still have issues…

The only commonality is Plex… Why can I not get this to work… It’s a shame because it’s such a nice interface…

Thanks for any help!!

What’s the details of your Plex Server/client setup (where’s the server running, media stored, network connection, client having issues with, etc)? Do you have static ip and port forwarding setup as well?

Sorry I just saw there was a reply… Server is running on wdmycloudex2 and that is connected to my switch which is connected to my wifi router. I’ve upgraded several times and I’m currently in the latest release. I don’t have static IP or port forwarding setup for external use. I do have the IP setup as reserved in my router settings though.

I have the reg MyCloud and it doesn’t have the ability to run PLEX on it directly. I’ve read that the EX2 Ultra can run PLEX but can not transcode anything due to the limited processing power. What format is your media that you’re having difficulty with?

What do you mean by this? Are you just using the client to play from the PLEX Server on the NAS or did you install another server on your computer and only playing the media from the NAS?

Correct, the ex2 didn’t have the power to transcode, but I was able to play titles directly for about a year and a half. Then all of a sudden it kept saying my network was slow, which clearly isn’t the case. I’m playing the same files/types of files as before, mp4.

With regard to the other machine, I actually set up a separate server with files copied over to an internal SSD and a powerful machine and Plex still tells me network is too slow. How much bandwidth is Plex trying to use?

On your second server for Remote Access settings, does it show a Green padlock and states “Fully accessible outside your network”? Also the port has to be different than the 1st server.

I’ll have to check, but even if it’s being accessed from the internal Network only?

Just fixed the port forwarding and remote access and it still freezes on my fire TV and tells me my network is too slow.

Does your media ever play or will not play at all? If it can play, are you able to monitor to see if it’s playing Direct Play or transcoding? You would need to check your settings in the server and on each client. Check to make sure your settings are set to max quality.

My movies USED to play just fine, but now they will not play at all (or EXTREMELY choppy). Either way, it’s unwatchable. Anyway, i’ve tried all settings to force a direct play, but it seems that the system still wants to transcode even though i can pass through 50-100 MB per second on my network to the NAS where everything is stored. I’m seeing “transcode runner appears to have died” every 300ms when trying to play something, then the video dies.

Can you provide a screenshot of the error. Do you have transcoding folder setup in case it is ever needed? Click the 3 dots on the bottom right of what you tried playing and select Get Info and provide a screenshot. Also do you have subtitles on?

The error literally just says “transcode runner appears to have died”.I’ve optimized files if that is what you are asking. There’s a lot to take a screenshot of in the info, what are you wanting to see? Codec, format, bitrate?oh, and I don’t have subtitles on.

If you still have the 2nd server in the computer setup, let’s focus on that since it’s more powerful than the MyCloud drive. On the fire tv go to settings and turn on the details on he Plex Client so when media is playing and you hit the center of the ring, it will show you the details of if it’s direct play or transcoding. I would also go to the dashboard of the computer sever to see the details of the media when it’s playing. If not Direct Play then that’s the issue.

I’m showing Direct play for both the web app and the FireTV although i couldn’t get the file to work via the plex app, i had to go through Kodi Add-On -> Plex. Any reason why the Native app is worthless when it comes to playing the file but the Kodi add-on works well?
