Playback stops randomly

Have been having same issue for a wile. Running binhex Plex docker in unraid. Really frustrating. Happens in browser and Windows app. In the browser i can rewind 10 sec and then it continues playing past the point where it stops. But when in the app I have to stop playback and start again, resuming from the point it stopped.

I have attempted the rollback solution, but found that the issue still occurred. So now I have attempted all solutions provided on this forum:

  • Rollback to: 1.14.1.5488 -cc260c476 [FAILED]
  • clear out the ā€œTerminate Sessions Paused for Longer Thanā€ setting in Settings > Network and then save changes [FAILED]

On top of the rollback, Web players failed to work because they required a newer server version. So back to the newest version again.

For anyone interested in trying a windows rollback as well, here is the 1.14.1.5488 -cc260c476

https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server/1.14.1.5488-cc260c476/Plex-Media-Server-1.14.1.5488-cc260c476.exe

GAWD! I’d take a hit of Covid if it would solve this!!!
I don’t remember it being this miserable a few years ago… I don’t remember at ALL this nonsense a few years ago.
Sure does make it real difficult to talk up PLEX to people… and I really WANT to.

Adding a me-too as well. Love PLEX, but having playback issues across a ROKU, android phone, and web client running in firefox.

Even playing music will trigger the freeze. It starts again after many minutes, maybe 20-30?

Like others here, I’m not actually running a windows server. Rather an intel NUC running linux and an attached NAS. Still, this is definitely the same issue, no doubt. Logs don’t say anything interesting.

I was considering a PLEX pass, but will hold off until this gets fixed. With this issue, it’s not reliable enough to make the investment. Interestingly, some folks are saying that disabling the ā€œTerminate Sessions Paused for Longer Thanā€ option might fix it, but that option requires a Plex Pass. It’s a catch 22.

Adding my me too as well. Running on a qnap NAS… very annoying. Quits playback completely with 1.19.any, went back to 1.18, currently on 1.18.3 trying to see if it goes away. Was running 1.18.0 for a long time and never had this problem.
Been paying for a plex pass but this is starting to concern me. Lots of versions seem affected.

Compounding this was when I initially upgraded to 1.19 my library completely vanished. So I went back to 18. Thought I would wait for 19 to mature, tried 19.3/4 and now this nonsense.

I hope this post helps those out there who are as frustrated as I have been. Over the past few months I’ve had to bounce back and forth between the old player and the new one depending on how my video was encoded. That got really tiring. I tried different clients too and the behavior is the same. Always stuttering and unplayable or on the old player with random drops during playback.

So I have an AppleTV 4K using client version 7.1.1. I am using PMS version 1.19.4.2935 on CentOS Linux 8.1. I have a real mix of media types (mkv, m4v, mp4) and encoding schemes (x265 and x264). After reading this forum I’ve tried it all and nothing fixed my problem.

This past week I changed three settings and everything works rock solid for almost two weeks now.

  1. On my PMS under Settings --> Transcoder --> Transcoder temporary directory value wasn’t set. The directory was blank. **Side note ** I have 64TB of storage using 5400 RPM WD Red drives. My OS is installed on a 850 GB Samsung SSD. I set my transcoder temporary directory for /tmp which resides on my SSD.

  2. On all my clients I changed them to the new player.

  3. I disabled direct play on all my clients.

For me, everything works very well now. No stuttering. No random stops. But what confuses me is now the client shows that the movie / TV show says it is being transcoded, however my CPU is still nearly idle. I checked the /tmp directory and while the movie is being played, the following happens: in the /tmp directory a Transcode directory is created by PMS. Then inside the transcode directory small files similar to this media-00000.ts are created. At this point I guess I don’t care whether my movie is being ā€˜transcoded’ or not. I just want to watch my movie without hassle. So disabling the direct play option within my client’s settings has made all the difference. My movie will take 2-3 seconds before it plays now where before it was nearly instantaneous. I guess it takes 2-3 seconds to split the movie up into those small *.ts bits. But they live on my OS’ SSD and it goes really quick. Good luck everyone.

I’ve been getting pauses during playback across my devices and various media recently. I’m not sure what changed that caused this. Either Ubuntu updates that were installed or something with a recent media server update. I’m on 1.19.4.2935 now.

I’ve been watching on a TiVo Bolt, Chromecast Ultra and Android phone. The phone doesn’t really have the issue, but I’m usually using that outside the house. The media is later episodes of a show that hasn’t had the issue before and encoded from the same version of Handbrake so I don’t think there’s issues with that. It seems to pause randomly. Sometimes a few minutes into a show sometimes 20 minutes in. When I look at the media server it looks like the bandwidth blips stopped around the same time the pause occurred.

I’ve used plex for about a year now without issues. As of this week I started hitting this across multiple clients and I have no idea why. Logs just show things like:

Jul 21, 2020 09:33:16.610 [0x7fbf05fa1700] DEBUG - Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 465338368 bytes: 110 - Connection timed out

I don’t know what to do with this or if it is relevant.

I tried playing the same video back just over SMB using VLC. It buffered a few times but worked. Maybe the buffering is when Plex is just stopping? Either way it worked though.

Count me in as well. Remote streams stop playing, every time - #2 by plexchalk

I only have problems with remote streams and it seems that the Plex server thinks the client has paused the playback, at least that is what I am reading in the Logs and on the Dashboard.

Jellyfin works fine BTW.

Months and months with no relief in sight and no one really seems helping to fix it.
This is sad.
I just upgraded the server to latest version hoping upon hope.
But I can’t play one damned song without this crapwagon stopping.
Plex has evolved from a nice tool with substantial featurs to one with TONS of bells and whistles that doens’t work for ā– ā– ā– ā– .
And forget remote. I just want the stupid pig to work off the local machine.
Such a nice tool to suck so bad.

I have this issue as well. I posted logs etc. in this thread
https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-on-nvidia-shield-2019-pro-freezes-after-11-13-minutes-playback/552782/94

I have updated my thread for remote playback problems with more logs and info:

Please, if you are having the same problems, keep commenting so that the Plex devs finally resolve or at least aknowledge the issue.

Hi all

Just adding in here that I too am a very long time user and fully paid customer too and unfortunately over the last few week or more we’re experiencing consistent playback issues :frowning:

I can here to finally log, only to be treated with a forum post that is months months old with the issues continuing. Really makes me nervous that this will ever be resolved and now looking into Plex alternatives.

To summarise our issues is basically to say that the mac Plex server crashes (no error dialog on the mac itself, just disappears from the menu bar across the top) This happens after a variety of times but most often around the 6/7 - 13/15 or so minutes. Makes watching a move pretty tiresome!

We’re accessing the Plex library as we have for many years now, via an Apple TV and the Mac itself is the same it’s always been, so the only variable has been the Plex software itself.

No settings manually changed etc. just accepted the Plex prompts for updates (regrettably so now!)

Looked back into /Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Updates and our updates don’t go back far enough for a ~1.14.X.XXXX that people have expressed to be more stable unfortunately and only back to 1.19.2.2737

Any help to resolve this would be massively appreciated please, especially from the point of view of the whole family!?! :frowning: Genuinely struggling to believe that as a collective we’ve been experiencing this for so many months now, crazy.

If we manually relaunch the Plex Media Server on the Mac then we’re able to stream our movies via Apple TV again, but restarting the server multiple times during a movie isn’t tenable, especially for the kids, just not possible and not a solution.

So again, any help is massively welcomed and also any suggestions for alternative media servers are appreciated too please (Apple TV compatible)

Regards

Mine freezes within minutes or trying to stream with my Chromecast. Lately I have been streaming to my fire stick which works better… not perfectly since it seems to only freeze once or twice in a show?. I’m using a qnap nas and nothing else has changed except regularly updating Plex.

+1 here.
Plex 1.20.4.3517 (with Pass) in Docker on Ubuntu 20.04.1 accessing media from FreeNAS 11 via NFS. No scarcity of storage, I/O or compute. Issue has been present since server creation about a fortnight ago.

Playback will generally stop at least once during the average 90 minute film irrespective of transcoded or direct stream. Further, during dropouts, the Plex web interface itself will fail, preventing access to media library, dashboard, or any configuration menus. On return, Plex Remote Access config page will also momentarily - and incorrectly - claim server cannot be accessed by remote clients.

Behaviour manifests for both local and remote users.
Extremely frustrating.

Having this same issue. Plex ran for years with no problems, but playback stops mid video and doesn’t resume unless I go back to menu and restart. Does it many times per movie.

Experiencing the same issue here with the latest version 1.21.1.3876-3c… default settings running on a Mac Mini for the server connected over a Ubiquiti Enterprise network CAT-8 hardlines to a NAS. I’m going to try and flip some switches, push some buttons, and jiggle some numbers to see if I can find the issue in the software. I’ve already checked out things on the network and no issues there. Update: Enabling Verbose Debug.

+1 After the last two updates or so, playback stops randomly. It’s super annoying.

just throwing into the ring on this one. Native Plex app on a 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro stops playback after approx. 10-15 minutes. The plex app for kodi streams without any issues. The logs from plex on the shield show the following

I’m also seeing similar behavior on a chromecast elsewhere in the house. Everything is hardwired.

Same here (life time plex pass member), this has been happening for about 6-9 months for me. The behavior is always the same, regardless of movie or tv show, regardless of direct stream or transcode, content stops playing at least once usually after 30 or so minutes. The most frustrating part is that it marks the content as watched fully even though it stopped somewhere in the middle.

I keep the version updated (latest plexmediaserver_1.21.3.4046-3c1c83ba4) as soon as it comes out but it continues to happen. Please fix this!
