Playback stuttering and black flashes on films

Hey,
When I go to play a film from my library I get stuttering strait away. It seems the film can’t play normally unless I change the quality to convert automatically. But even when I change that over and play, I’ll get random black flickers every few mins or so.

This happens with playback on my Android phone, Android TV and on Plex web using Chrome. Haven’t noticed the issue with TV shows.

Any idea what’s going on? Why do I need to change the quality and why the flickering?

95% of my films are in 1080p (HEVC Main 10), AAC 5.1, x265, mp4 format
