When trying to play a 4K file (direct play) remotely on my in-laws Sony Bravia (Android TV OS) the playback is very stuttery/choppy. To me it isn’t a bandwidth issue as there’s no buffering although I may be wrong? My home server runs on Windows 10 and I have Virgin Media Fibre internet. 200down/20up.

If your server upload is only 20meg, that is probably the problem, 4K content (from 4K Blu-ray) can exceed 100meg. The displayed bit rate is only an average.
Thanks for the reply, I get that but surely it it was a bandwidth issue then the playback would buffer? There is absolutely no buffering and audio plays back without any issue. It just seems the video is skipping every other frame and it’s consistent like that. It isn’t “choppier” is some sections the whole playback looks as though it’s skipping every other frame…
Have you looked at the plex dashboard to confirm if it is being direct play or transcoding?
It’s really impossible to help without more details/pictures/logs.

I have a 900 series Sony and found that 265 encoding stuttered like you describe. 264 encoding did not. These are mp4 movies I’m talking about and the movies were 1080 not 4K. 4k(HEVC) works fine.
