Some, but not all, 4K files have stuttering video (but smooth audio that plays as expected while the video drags behind). These files are Direct Play, and this is reproducible (in trying to troubleshoot, I restarted the router, server and Apple TV to no avail).
Interestingly, these same files will play perfectly in Infuse for Apple TV and a Plex Web instance running on a different computer over the same network. All are connected via Wi-fi, no Ethernet. Thoughts?
BTW, I’m trying to upload the log from the Apple TV but I’m getting an error in the editor saying 'Filesize must be greater than or equal to 1"
I did as suggested and turned off DirectPlay, and now all the files play smoothly, so I guess there’s something not quite right with DirectPlay on Apple TV.
BTW those same files work fine using DirectPlay on Samsung TV app.
Thanks, @danps. I did try turning off Direct Play but Plex then complains that my server isn’t powerful enough to transcode - that’s not accurate though, as I can turn off Direct Play on other devices and the files in question play without issue.
So, there seems to be a bigger issue at play with the Apple TV.
Quick update: dropping back to the old player fixes the issue. The video plays smoothly. HOWEVER, I lose the Dolby Vision in the file - guess the old player didn’t do Dolby Vision?
some 4k files stutter, some dont. I have an aTV 4k hardwired into a QNAP server. Gigabit connection. I checked bitrate, CPU and RAM load in the server, tried changing TrueDTS to AC3, doesnt help. Nothing seems overloaded, only two out of 10 fils stutter. I cannot see anything in the codec etc that is different.
If I select the old player, my server tried to convert, and that does not work. If I disable direct play, the good files still play OK, and the bad files still stutter.
Subtitles can be on or off, doesnt help. I looked at my router, no dropped packages. It really seems to be coneected to the files.
