Player for MacOS menu bar not hiding in full screen

Note to Plex
I see that you don’t have any support by chat, phone or email for paying customers.
When I pay for the service and you point me to the forums. I expect to at the very least get a reply when I follow your instructions on how to post.

I tried posting 3 months ago and got 0 replies. I tried replying in a thread by another user with the same problem. We got 1 reply from a moderator who said it works on his device. I still don’t know why he wanted to tell us that.

I request help troubleshooting this after googling and searching your forums.
I am following your guidelines on proper posting here: https://forums.plex.tv/t/how-to-get-help-in-the-forums/273956/1

Description:
When I play video in fullscreen the menu bar does not disappear. It does change to dark mode but is still visible.
(I may have to remind people that this is not about auto-hiding the menu bar on macOS.)

Here it is not working as expected in Plex for macOS:

Here it is working as expected in Plex for web on Firefox:

Server version: 1.40.2.8395 on Win10 Pro
App Version: 1.93.0.144-9b2f4a13 for macOS (not the Universal App)
Device: MacBook Pro M1 with macOS Sonoma 14.3.1

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Opened Plex for macOS
  2. Navigated to any media
  3. Play media
  4. Enter full screen either by 1. Clicking “Enter Fullscreen” icon at the top right corner or 2. Double clicking the video.

Expected:
The menu bar should turn black and not show any icons. It works on VLC, iina, Plex for web in Firefox, Chrome, Arc, Opera.

Actual:
The menu bar turns to dark mode but still shows the Apple logo, “Plex” and the icons on the right.

Logs:
PlexLog macOS.rtfd.zip (7.1 KB)
Here are app logs, grabbed right after launching the app after the above issue.

Are you on multiple monitors or using any software that affects screens? I can’t reproduce. if only happening during playback may be a mpv bug we need to help find

If you go to full screen before you start playback does it do the same?

probably will need to see the desktop player logs from after going fullscreen

Thank you for quick reply BigWheel.

Single laptop monitor, attaching externals screens makes no difference.

I do have a couple of software that may affect the menu bar:
AltTab, Bartender. However, turning them off makes no difference and I didn’t have them when I first raised the issue 3 months ago.

It makes no difference if I go full screen before I start playback.

Regarding the player logs. I followed the instructions at your link. But I don’t have any Plex folder in there:

I have a couple of logs in …/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports but they’re from 2 hrs earlier. Are these what we’re looking for?

Those are the system logs. The ~ at the front of path in the instructions mean your user which would be

Macintosh HD>Users>your username on computer>Library>Logs

If you use the Go menu in the Finder and choose to folder and enter ~/Library/Logs/Plex/ it should take you there.

Thank you for the explanation.

Log attached: Plex.log (272.4 KB)

Steps taken at 23:13

  1. Opened Plex for macOS
  2. Clicked an episode of Snowfall
  3. Entered Full Screen (This is where the menu bar should hide the icons)
  4. Played the episode
  5. Quit application

Hi,

Any updates or next steps I should take?

Unfortunately we still cannot reproduce the issue and there is nothing unusual in your logs

Thank you for reply.

Can I get a discount as your product in fact doesn’t work as advertised and you can’t repair it?

Well the app is free for anyone. Nothing about full screen is a paid Plex Pass feature. No one else can reproduce. Not hiding the menu bar is a MacOS feature.
