Player is extremely slow and crashes while direct-playing x265 content

Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
Player Version#: 1.6.2.994
Player logs are attached. Plex.log (345.4 KB)

Hey guys, I am running a setup with a server on Windows 10 (1.18.5.2309) and multiple clients (phones, Windows machines, FireTV etc.).
Most of my media is encoded with x265 in an mkv container.

I can direct-play on pretty much any device without problems, but for some reasons I am unable to do so on my Windows machines, mainly my Surface Book 1 (i5 6300U, Intel HD Graphics 520).

I have two problems:

  1. The Plex software (Latest version 1.6.2.994, tried multiple different versions including old Plex Media Player versions) is running terribly slow, like 5-10fps while scrolling through my libraries. Very unpleasant to use.
  2. It is absolutely impossible to direct-play any movie via direct-play/direct-stream. The player crashes immediately. Transcoding to h264 is fine, but I would really like to be able to direct-play. The machine is natively able to hardware-decode the files when the exact same files are stored locally, so the problem has to be plex.

While using the browser I dont see any of these problems, but of course direct-play with x265-content is not possible there.

If you have any advice I would be very happy to hear about it, it really sucks to have paid for a lifetime pass and effectively not being able to use it properly. Thank you very much in advance…

UPDATE 2/2/20: I thought I had installed MEDIA PLAYER on my new WIN10 laptop but it seems I installed “Plex for WINdows v1.6.x” It is the Plex for Windows that is crashing not the Media Player which I just installed and will use as its really what I wanted aka V3.104.2 after comparing to my other WINS server I run it on too.

Original Post: I noticed today that my plex media layer for windows has suddenly started to crash on Version#: 1.6.2.994 which I recently updated too. My windows events shows this.

Faulting application name: Plex.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5e30c850
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.18362.418, time stamp: 0x99ca0526
