Playing Plex movies on Plex server

Server Version#: TrueNAS-13.0-U1.1
Player Version#: plexmediaserver 1.28.2.6151 13.0-RELEASE-p13

I have Plex running as a plugin on my TrueNAS server. All my local content – music, photos, movies – works fine. We can access and play all local content on any machine with decent graphics on our LAN. We are not using remote access.

My question is about Plex movies. Plex movies run but with a white screen. When I try to remove ad blocking for the site, the url is for the IP address and port of Plex on my LAN. There is no option to remove ad blocking. Should I be accessing Plex movies using a separate url like “plex.tv” and use my NAS plugin just to view local content?

The URL in your browser’s address bar only tells you about from where the web app has been loaded into your web browser. It doesn’t tell you from where the media data stream is coming.

You should always use https://app.plex.tv, unless it is impossible (like during an internet outage).

The reason for the white screen is the copy protection on the Plex content. It prevents playback if the web app hasn’t been loaded over a secure connection. Which is the case if you load it from your local plex server.

Thanks Otto. That worked.

It would appear, from the lengthy url when viewing my local content, I am being re-directed to my NAS when selecting local content. Are there any security risks associated with this? Would it be best to use the LAN IP address/port number url when viewing only local content and “app.plex.tv” for watching Plex movies?

No. As I already explained above, the URL is only loading the web app into your browser. As soon as that is done, the function between the hosted web app and the local web app is identical.

Thanks Otto. Got it…
