Ad-Supported movies not available from proxy

Server Version#: 1.18.3.2156
Player Version#: Web 4.12.3

I have my Plex server running at a proxied address so I can easily access it without remembering ports and whatnot. However, when I access it through the domain name, I only have access to my local media, and not the ad-supported movies and TV shows. When I access my server from plex.tv, though, the movies are available to play. What’s the difference?

The version number of the web app. app.plex.tv is simply newer.

I’m confused. I’m using the latest (as of yesterday, I see there’s an update released today) server version, and I’m accessing the site provided by the server. Is there something I can do to get access to the ad supported movies through my custom domain without needing to go through plex.tv? I’m already authenticated through Plex, and it’s my understanding that the plex.tv service was implemented so people don’t need to forward ports in their routers.

All you do, is to load the web app into your browser. No matter if you go to app.plex.tv or to the IP of your local server.
Once the web app is loaded, it works exactly the same. The data streams are the same, taking the same routes. There is no reason to prefer the local web app.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’m running the same application from the same location. The only difference is how I get there. So it seems like I should be able to stream the ad supported movies, regardless of how I get to my Plex. But I can’t watch the videos if I go through my custom domain, and I can if I go through Plex.tv.

Yes, that is because the software version of the web app which is bundled with your server is several versions behind the online version. This is intentional.
But as I said: there is no need to load the local version at all. Just set a bookmark in your browser to app.plex.tv and use this from now on.

Ahh I see what you’re saying now. Thanks.
