Playlist - Plex plays individual shows and ignores playlist

Short version: I’m using Plex on AppleTV with the server on Linux. I have a playlist of TV shows and when I start playing in the middle of the playlist, Plex follows the TV show order and NOT the playlist order. It just ignores the playlist completely.

More details: I’m re-watching the Stargate shows. It starts with 7 seasons of SG1, then S8 of SG1 was broadcast at the same time with S1 of Atlantis. For 3 years, if you’re watching the shows in broadcast order, it alternates between SG1 and Atlantis. In the past I always just watched all of SG1, then all of Atlantis, but this time I thought, “With Plex, I can make a playlist that will play them in broadcast order.” (I did change it a bit so 2 parters would have both episodes back to back.)

I didn’t think of this until I got to th point just before I’d be switching back and forth between shows. I made up the playlist. I had already marked everything as unwatched, except for the episodes I watched on this rewatching. So everything in the playlist I had already seen had been marked as watched and the episodes I haven’t seen were marked as unwatched.

Thinking this was all setup and that now I could just use the playlist to see the episodes in broadcast order (instead of having to switch back and forth by hand), picked the list and hit “Play.” It started playing the original Stargate movie, the one at the start of the playlist. It was marked unwatched and, with other playlists, I’ve noticed that a video that has been partially watched won’t be played on shuffle mode in full - playback starts where I had stopped watching an episode.

Silly, but I figured Plex would be consistent - if it didn’t play something marked “Watched,” or the part of a video that was had been watched, that it would skip all the watched episodes on the playlist. Nope! it doesn’t seem to care what is and isn’t marked watched.

So I scrolled down, through 7 seasons of SG1, to get to where SG1 episodes and Atlantis episodes would alternate and hit Play. The first episode was an SG1 episode. When it was done, instead of playing the next episode on my playlist, it just started playing the next SG1 episode. I’ve found that it does the same with Atlantis: I start playing on the playlist, partway through, and instead of following the playlist, it plays that one episode, then keeps playing the other episodes in that season of the show that episode was in.

In other words, I can play something in a playlist, but Plex ignores the playlist order and just keeps playing the TV show that one episode I started with is in.

How can I get it to play the episodes in order on the playlist and skip the first 7 seasons of SG1 and start where I am now?

The more I think about this, and seeing nobody is responding with what should be happening, I find I’m thinking this is a bug I should report.

Anyone know what’s going on and if this inconsistent behavior is not a bug?
