PlayStation 5 compatibility

Np tu!

Plex on the PS5 seems to hitch or pause for a few frames roughly every second while playing the exact same file on my PS4 with direct play and direct stream disabled has no problems. It’s an 1080p .mkv. I’ll have to try some more files to see if I can narrow it down.

Really hoping the PS5 Plex app will be able to play my HEVC files (Direct play) so that I no longer have to switch back and forth between that and the Roku. My old OG 2013 PS4 could not. Should be getting mine on Tuesday :crossed_fingers:

Plex does NOT work on PS5 at this time. i have one, and i installed it thursday november 12 when i got my PS5 and it does NOT work. claims the plex server is currently unavailable…it is NOT unavailable. every device in my home with plex installed works fine EXCEPT the ps5

As far as I’m concerned, all of you with PS5 problems have a PS5, and I don’t, so pbthththttht.

They added a new Announcements section for the PS5 and an updated version for the PS5 just today.

But there’s also a thread about not being able to connect to local PMS servers, and a comment from Plex that they’re working on it.

PS5 App will not connect to Local Servers

Currently (for me atleast) Plex is not working with some of my content, Direct Stream on seems to put a green artifacting hue over everything while leaving it on Direct Play is fine but my nas can’t handle transcoding very well so it buffers a lot I have turned off HDR to no avail

.

So I just installed Plex on my new PS5 and it immediately hooked up with the server on my laptop, but when I try to play any video it buffers for a while and then I get the Playback Error “An unexpected playback problem occurred.”

Any idea what’s causing that nonstop on the new hardware?

I was wrong about MKV’s being unsupported. They do direct stream, just not direct play. I still have what appear to be framerate issues on all of my Blu-ray MKV rips I’ve tried so far where it hitches for a few frames roughly every second or so. DVD MP4 rips seem to play just fine.

I can confirm that most of my HEVC content does work just fine on the PS5 but I did have the green screen issue with some of my content as well as Raptor mentioned. Hopefully that will get fixed soon. Very excited that most of it does work!

My PS5 has an ethernet cable with gigabit internet and it buffers. When I play the same movie, in original quality on my chromecast ultra it plays fine

can confirm, same happens to me. Im having issues with stuttering or frame drops. not as smooth as the LG TV app ive used for years,

I’ve got a very robust network all wired in and a i7 with 970 gpu but still has issues with stuttering on PS5. But if i turn off direct play/stream setting on the app, no more issues aside from transcoding large HD/1080p file which then buffer constantly.

maybe related to the PS5’s aggresive DCHP and the Plex devs having to get around that.

Any updates on this? Still have green screen issues as well as stuttering/buffering when playing 4k (direct stream)

I haven’t ran into the green issue personally but I haven’t tested thoroughly as there is a lot of buffering issues. (tested again last night) So just stopped using the plex app until there is an update.

But there has not been an update on the ps5, also server updates have not mentioned anything ps5 wise

I have just set up the PS5 today and the first thing I tested was the Plex app…and guess what…NONE of my movies (which is my ENTIRE library of 550 films) will play that I have as h.265 format. There is sound but the screen is all green, so I scoured every setting I could find either in the Plex app or the setting of the PS5 to see if something needed to be changed…but NOPE, nothing made any difference for me, so that is when I went to the trusty old google search and here I am.

My TV Shows folder is all in H.264 format and from the couple episodes I tested it on, those play perfectly…so it seems that H.265 is a NO GO for now, hopefully an update will sort that???

This issue I am having on my PS5 Plex playback is that none of the content recognizes playback progress — either half way through a show or registering a show was completely played. The buffering is a huge issue to the point that my wife and kid shave started singing a “Plex buffering song” when we start a movie or show. Often in the middle of it too. The progress thing is maddening though. It crashes while buffering half way through, I restart it and have no idea where were were so I am constantly fast forwarding to resume.

I used to rely on the Apple TV app before I got a PS5 — that was almost flawless — this has been beyond frustrating.
