So on my shiny new PS5 Plex is stuttering on every video when direct stream is enabled. Every few seconds feels like dropped frames. Sdr video. Hdr video. HD, 4K. Doesn’t matter. If i disable direct stream It transcodes the video obviously and it plays fine and smooth for SDR videos. But it kills color on HDR videos.
Please fix this issue. As i really enjoy using my ps5 as a streaming device instead of my tv because of headphones i can plug.
Every other media app works great on a new PS5. Even Amazon doing 4K HDR now. But Plex didn’t quiet there yet.
For comparisoin i tried running plex and play same video files on my roku tv and ipad. And it plays smoothly with direct stream. No stuttering.
In addition to the fact that I cannot connect to my server if secure connection is disabled server side. Even when the player is configured to permit it.
Anyway, I’m sure it’s not a connectivity issue because the console is connected via Ethernet to a gigabit network, the same one the server is connected to, and I see the console pulling up to 700Mbit/s bursts of data from the Plex server. Which is a Linux server.
Other devices don’t have issues direct streaming the same content.
Can confirm same with me. like its dropping a frame every second.
direct stream/play: disabled: works (bar buffering from a gtx1060 which is odd in itself)
direct stream/play: enabled: stuttering.
wired connection to PS5 as well as to my LG TV (same router) with plex which works fine.
all other media apps on PS5 do not suffer from this issue so it has to be the plex app
Happy to help devs with logs etc. please ask as this is the only thing killing my love of the PS5 as my next gen media center. Just a “we know, we are working on it” would be fantastic!
I played one of the MKV’s that exhibits this playback issue with Plex using a thumb drive and the media player and it plays without the hitching but it also has the wrong aspect ratio and fills the entire screen.
I also have this problem. I have a Vizio M65-E0 with a Vizio SB36512-F6 soundbar and a PS5 connected to the sound bar. My plex media sits on a Synology DS218+.
I have no issues playing content via the Vizio TV Plex app. Playing 4k content via the PS5 Plex app results in near constant buffering. When looking at the Plex resource monitor and the synology resource monitor you can see the processor is pinned as I assume its trying to transcode or something.
I second these issues. Very disappointed with the initial quality of the app. Pretty much impossible to watch anything from my server without it choking and buffering. Starting a file whether it be 1080p HDR, non-HDR, hevc, mp4 takes 3x the amount of time to start compared to my roku on the same tv. If I do get it running, seeking causes it to sit buffering and won’t start back up without restarting the show from the beginning.
I also have a new samsung q7dt and the behavior is strikingly similar. Constant buffering, streams unable to start or the app just crashing. Again, hooking up a roku solves all these issues.
I don’t think this is entirely plex’s fault on the ps5. Theres always limitations on console OS’s. Transcoding down a peg or two seems to help a bit but higher bitrate files are still sketchy at best. Watching at lower quality defeats the purpose of having those files.
Please don’t confuse Buffering and Stuttering. The issue on this thread is about stuttering only!
For those with buffering problems, try disabling transcoding.
Ahh yes. Thanks for the heads up. I am definitely suffering primarily from buffering problems. Though I do see issues with stuttering as well. With transcoding disabled I don’t think the file will play at all. But I will need to confirm that later tonight.
Same here. Everything hardwired on my end and don’t have this issue with using the LG webOS Plex app (720, 1080, 4k all play fine; even 4k remuxes) - to confirm, I’m doing direct play/stream, no transcoding. Only the PS5 Plex app stutters (PS5 Prime Video and Netflix also work ok).
I’ve tinkered with all the transcoding settings based on other forums, but nothing seems to fix it.
I am seeing strange green screens and buffering when transcoding and “Direct Stream” is enabled, usually when audio is being transcoded (TrueHD, MP2 etc).
Playing Stargate SG-1, MP2 audio. “Play original” - transcodes on server, green screen and stuck infinitely buffering
Same file, set quality to “automatic” - transcodes on server, client plays fine
Same file, “play original” but disable Direct Stream on client - transcodes on server, client plays fine
So it seems that whatever default transcoding with direct stream that the server is giving the client gives an unplayable file resulting in infinite buffering/loading issue. This is happening on an LG OLED, PS5, an Xbox One S and the web player in a browser.
Think you might be in the wrong topic. This is a separate issue from buffering. When playing content on the PS5 using direct stream there seems to be either a frame duplicating or dropping creating a stutter effect.
Got my PS5 today, and also have this issue except it doesn’t matter if the content is a direct stream or transcoding, it’ll have the same weird frame skipping/stutter issue every few seconds. I don’t have this issue streaming from any other device, only the PS5.
Just wanted to throw my name into the bag. I am getting this as well on HD movies and direct play ones that don’t have a problem aren’t very large. I am plugged into a gigabit LAN with some serious networking gear. My other Google Chromecast Gen2 streams without an issue (also over LAN)
