Hello do we know if the preview app will be compatible with PlayStation 5? I just preordered mine and and I’m going to be consolidating from multiple devices down to just the PS5. I also ordered the media remote, just hoping that Plex works with the remote and PS5 for movies and live TV:). Thank you!
+1 I am in the exact same boat with the same questions!
+1, also interested if the PS5 version of the client will support the MKV container this time around.
Some other media apps were announced for the PS5 today: https://blog.playstation.com/2020/10/22/new-media-experience-and-top-entertainment-streaming-apps-coming-to-ps5/
Plex is not one of them. I hope that doesn’t mean anything and that they have a PS5 app ready to go Nov. 12th.
I certainly hope Plex will have an app ready for PS5 as my PS4 is where I have been watching my plex content for the last number of years and I intend to continue doing so on the new consoles. No sign of Plex on the PS5 list of media apps announced today which is a worry, I hope the devs can allay our fears and announce one will be available at launch or soon after…
We are working on it but can’t guarantee it will be compatible immediately at the PS5 launch but should been soon after if all goes well.
Do you know if this app is going to support true hd/atmos passthrough? I’m wondering if it will be equivalent in features to the nvidia shield app or if it will remain somewhat limited on the ps5?
Fantastic news, reading into the media capabilities of the hardware it will be an incredible Plex client. Can’t wait!.
Do you have a link to anything with these capabilities?

There is no mystery my friends, it is just a AMD RDNA 2 GPU inside the PS5. It handles all modern codecs in hardware (h.265 etc).
Unfortunately, that’s not really good enough. The PS4 also supports HW decode of some codecs that are not exposed by Sony (from my understanding). I cant find the link, but I remember reading that the PS4 media player app had more codecs available to it than the Plex app was given access to by Sony. So simply that the PS5 has an RDNA2 GPU doesnt mean we gain support for all RDNA features as the Plex community.
The PS4 had almost nil codec support ok hardware, no h.265 etc as it’s too old. The PS5 has all of this evidenced by the support for Netflix in 4K which is HEVC codec based.
I’m not trying to argue, but PS4 Pro also has support for Netflix 4K. However, Netflix also streams with other codecs than HEVC. They use HEVC, VP9 and are moving to AV1. I would be most interested if VP9 and AV1 hardware decode are available on the silicon via RDNA2, as well as if Sony is opening them up to third party applications. HEVC is a given, for sure.
Very interested to see what audio/video codecs are supported for direct play. If it can match the Nvidia Shield I’ll be picking one up. It’s the deciding factor for me between PS5 and XBOXSX, whichever one supports all audio/video codecs in Plex for direct play will get my money. If neither do I’ll be trying to hunt down a 3070 FE and keeping my Nvidia Shield.
I did have a question for you. Especially with the upcoming launch of both consoles. In your professional opinion would it be better to get the PS5 or the Xbox series X if my soul use was for Plex and its compatibility, stability/reliability?
Not intended to be a loaded question
. Just asking your recommendation.
Plex is ready and working on the PS5 but media support on the PS5 isn’t as good as the PS4 as of now. .mkv’s are unsupported and have to be transcoded. When the PS4 launched it didn’t have a media player and additional container support came later via a firmware update which I expect will be the same with the PS5.
Do you by chance use Plex for live TV? How does it work if so.
I’m afraid I don’t use Plex for live TV.
