Please add support for edl files

Can Plex add support for edl commercial skipping files? It makes a lot more sense than stripping out commercials from the video files. Stripping isn’t always accurate and run the risk of stripping some of the recording.

Totally agree. In the mean time, I built a custom button on my harmony elite remote (down, down, right ,ok) on android. That makes skipping a single button press. Not perfect, but better.

But let’s not forget also to add the ability to turn auto skipping on and off on demand, the way DVRMS Toolbox does for Windows Media Center (and the way ReplayTV did it).

When you come to a show that comskip horribly misinterpreted–lots of dark scenes and flashes–the only answer is simply to tell the system, “don’t auto skip right now”. You don’t want to have to go back into settings and turn that off globally, like Channels makes you do. No, you want to touch a simply button that says “turn it off until I stop watching this particular show, then turn it back on again for me”.

This isn’t rocket surgery. Of course, nor is live detection of commercials so you can skip during watch while record, like ReplayTV did. But nobody’s bothering to do that, either. I just don’t get it.

The best I have come up with is marking the shows where the commercial. Then I added a programmed button on my harmony elite remote (down down right ok). This gives one button press to skip commercials. The markings are still hit or miss on some shows. In that setup, if it gets marked incorrectly, it is partially through the commercial break.

so I can set up Plex to mark commercials only but not cut them?

How?

You can’t set Plex to mark but not remove currently. It is a request that is made often, and I’m seeing some changes that suggests they may be working toward this. The intro skip proves the ability and codebase to do this. Also, the settings option to turn commercial skipping on and off recently changed from a check box to a drop down. The drop down right now only has two options, but why change it to a drop down if not to eventually provide more than two options! I’m optimistic based on these.
