Please give us the option to disable the “server update is available” notifications on Apple TV

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1913
Player Version#: 2.6

I’ve mentioned this before but that thread is now closed so I’m posting again. The server update notifications that appear on the Apple TV are quite annoying and problematic for my household.

The biggest issue is that these notifications appear sporadically and often while someone is in the middle of pressing buttons on the remote. So it’s very easy for someone to accidentally select an option without realizing it, and from time to time it’s the “update” option which causes everyone to have to stop and wait for the update to finish before we can continue watching our media. It’s a frustrating and groan inducing moment when it happens.

And on a more philosophical level, streaming devices are not an appropriate place to inform of there being a server update. It takes over the entire screen and forces the user to make a decision when all we want to do is watch something. I don’t even want anyone other than me to be able to initiate a server update.

And those two points aside, it’s just annoying! When people are using my Apple TV to browse Plex, all they want to do is watch media. They do not want to update the server or be asked to.

Please please please give us the option to turn that off. I already get update notifications on my desktop systems and on my phone. That’s plenty of notifications.

YES please!! plex on apple tv has become so atrocious, that i have to keep letting all my friends use my account (which has plex pass, so that they can get access to the enhanced player. the stock player is just crap now) thus everyone gets this annoying message and does not know what to do.

please plex, either:
1- just give everyone the enhanced player (bc the stock PLEX player is broken)
or
2- get rid of this message (we all know how to update the server app)
or
3- fix the apple tv stock player (ie ppl stream at way too low speed, even when we all are on fiber w same ISP, and NO-plex-tunneling in effect, UNLESS they have auto adjust on, which if auto adjust is on, then they cant seek ANY videos wo it dropping back to show/movie screen and having to start over)

My household just mainly uses just one Plex account (mine) and no home users so I’d really like to be able to turn this message off for my own account rather than use a different one.

+1 i don’t like the server update overlay either. would prefer a more discreet method or not at all from the appletv client.

Please provide the option to disable update notifications on the web browser version as well as other devices like Roku.
Glad to hear a solution is potentially in the works.

I’ve never seen this type of notification on the Apple TV, or any client except the web client.
I was going to ask for it !

What do you have Server version updates set to? “Ask me” or “Automatically during scheduled maintenance”?

You do NOT want the current notification version on the Apple TV. It is disruptive, takes over the entire viewing screen, and you can accidently select something you don’t want because it pops up when you’re in the middle of navigating or selecting content.

Plus one for me. I manage about 150 Apple TVs in a school. Each has the AppleTV Plex app that points to a campus server. I don’t want my users (teachers, students) to see the update alert when a new version of PMS drops.

Bumping this to keep it alive. Any word on a fix?

Yes please! I’d love this since I don’t want my kids who have Apple TV’s mistakenly updating the server.

+1. My kids accidentally do this all the time and don’t understand why things quit working.

Bumping this. I handle everything on the web version and this is disruptive and confusing for the family…

Plex devs, could you give us an update about this?

Given the frequent updates for Plex Media Server combined with that I don’t install updates immediately, this still bothers me and my partner many times per month. It’s currently the most annoying aspect of using Plex across all of my devices!

All we need is something simple like a check box in the app’s settings for “Don’t show server update notifications” or something like that. I can’t imagine that’s difficult to implement!

I absolutely do not understand the logic to this. It’s a terrible UX and most frustrating thing about Plex. My family members should not be able to decide and be interrupted when all they want to do is play videos.
