Does anyone know if there’s a way to disable the server update prompt that shows up on the Plex client in Android TV? Super frustrating, I often accidentally click “Update Now” as it appears while navigating the application.
PMS 1.24.5.5173, Synology DS918+
Plex Android TV app 8.26.0.28833
Where does this appear on the screen?
I’ve never seen such a prompt on my Shield or FireStick.
Not doubting you. Just curious where it appears.
In the Shield (not Plex app) settings it is possible to disable notifications for any app. If possible on your Android TV device that might shut off the server update prompt.
It pops up in the middle of the screen. It’s an application prompt, not a system notification. I’ll grab a screenshot next time I get it, if I can remember.
I’m running on an Nvidia Shield TV.
Here’s an update:
- The prompt appears only if your Plex Media Server is running on MacOS or Windows.
- There is no way to disable the prompt.
- You should only be prompted once per version. If you refuse the update, you should not be prompted until the next update is available.
Also, looking at the Plex for Android release notes, this was added in v8.3.0, in July 2020.
WHATS NEW:
- Add support for server update notification.
Thanks! Appreciate the info.
Are you sure there is not way to disable it? I wonder of one could block the check for new versions using a firewall or DNS black hole ( DNSBL ). It depends on how the update check and notification systems work. You could try to block the check , or , failing that, block the notification.
Another thought… do all users get the notifications? If not, have an admin user for updates, and non-admin user for watching content.
There is no Plex setting to disable it.
I do not know if it can be disabled by other means.
Unchecking Push Notifications setting in Settings → Server_Name → General does not disable receiving notifications to update the server.
I ran a quick test. I installed an old version of PMS on a Windows PC. I created a Managed User on my account. The Managed User did not see the prompt to update PMS. I switched to the Admin User and was prompted to update PMS.
So, your idea about having a non-admin user to view content looks like it works.
Note that my testing lasted all of 10 minutes, so YMMV.
You have to select “skip this version.”. If you just back out of the prompt you may be prompted again.
I agree.
As mentioned above, I installed an old version of PMS on my Windows PC to see how the notification works (I run Plex on a Synology NAS (Linux based), which is why I had never seen the prompt).
I didn’t see a pattern to the notification. It popped up once when I selected a library. During another test, it appeared as I was about to hit Play for a movie, which means it updated my server instead of playing the movie.
Unfortunately, at this time there is no way to disable the notification.
Appreciate the engagement all. FWIW I created a thread in the feedback section to address - Android TV Client - Disable Server Update Notification. Feel free to upvote if you’d like.
Thanks for the info. Selecting “skip this version” will disable the “check for update” button in the Web console. At least , that has been my experience.
I successfully duplicated watch status and playlists to my non-admin account, and I haven’t been prompted to update my server since using that account as my default. I feel like I’m back in the driver’s seat of my server now.
There is still occasional bothersome prompt to enable notifications in the iOS app. I’ll research that and perhaps start another thread.
