Please Help: problems sharing media, transcoding

thats basically what i do, i usually dont reboot my pc. I shut off the vpn, i close my plex server, restart the plex server, open a browser and go to my plex/router etc

Well, I’m stuck then. I think perhaps the installation of the VPN (even when disabled) is messing with the network settings on your computer. This is why people highly recommend avoiding VPNs.

I’d suggest, if you have a spare computer lying around (I do, but I’m a techy), to put Plex onto that. This would be good to ensure max uptime of the server, while also avoiding problems with a VPN.

(Hey, is VPN installed locally, or do you use it in the router for ALL house traffic?)

The VPN is on my pc, not in the router. I cant imagine how the VPN could be affecting Plex like that. Im going to uninstall it and see what happens. I do have another pc, but im currently shy of space and using both my monitors in a two monitor set up. Its an idea to consider (especially since my files are on externals), but it would be a bit of a hassle so ill save that for now.

i uninstalled my vpn and got a clean boot and reset everything and it made no difference, the outside my network still turned red in seconds… SMH

Oh. *smacks head* Windows firewall. See if there is a restriction preventing your comp from receiving traffic on port 32400.

My firewall is disabled but i checked anyway and didnt see any blocked ports,

Well… shoot. I don’t have any experience with Plex server in windows, to know if there is anything else that might interfere. I’m sorry, but I’m out of ideas.

ty for your help

Ok people, ty all for your help. My nephew is the family PC expert, had him on my PC via team viewer and after about 45 minutes he figured it out (as did a few of you in this and another post). Its a double Nat situation with my provider. Im getting it fixed, it should take 1-3 days and of course another $5 a month SMH. But if i get it resolved idc ill be happy. Ill let you all know. TY again

The Double Nat situation was rectified today, and still my friends watching get transcoded vids… :frowning:

Ok, if double nat was rectified, does the remote access page show that your server is accessible outside the home?

I just logged on and it was red until i retried it and now its green. It was green when i had a family member access my server as a test case and still the vids were transcoded…

Ok, if remote access is working (cross fingers), then let’s make sure they are not making the next mistake, in that most clients by default restrict THEMSELVES from accessing videos remotely faster than 2 Mbps. Most likely because a lot of US households tend to not have good upload speeds (I have 8Mbps upload).

Umm, first thing. Show me the Dashboard when someone is playing and it transcodes. It will give us an idea what might be causing the transcode.

Have your friends go to their player settings, and make sure that remote quality is set to MAXIMUM here. I think default is 2Mbps:

Then, if it still transcodes, ask them to click on this (or similar, in other non-windows players) to see if they can access more quality options.
