Im a newb and need some help please… All my videos that my friends watch from my server are transcoded and thus at reduced quality. I cant seem to find my way around this. I will provide as much info as i can and maybe someone can spot something to help…
I have been using a VPN frequently as i am downloading often. But even when i disable the VPN and reboot everything, nothing changes.
I am running “my Server” off to 2 external hard drives (attached to my pc), i know others who do the same with no issue.
My nephew helped me set up Plex (i was having problems back in the day), he had me manually specify a public port. But even when i disable that, nothing changes.
When i try to enable remote access it never stays “green” for more than a few seconds and then goes red. On another thread someone suggested to make sure my router is port forwarded to my server. Im not sure exactly how or what that means. I logged into my router IP and didnt see anything in regards to port forwarding.
I’m including two pics. Please someone help me get this straightened out. Thx!
There seems to be a problem with your remote access setup that results in an indirect connection. Those indirect connections are relayed through a server of Plex and limited to 1 Mbps (2 Mbps for Plex Pass members).
When it comes to remote access, a lot of things can cause such issues… this can be a problem with your Plex configuration, the host device, your home network, the router connecting your home network to the internet or even your ISP.

TY for the response but i was looking for some more direct how to info, ive had the links sent to me, they are a bit beyond me, ill give it another try however.
Establish a manual port forward on your main router and test if this is visible/accessible from outside your home network (e.g. using canyouseeme.org).
If it’s not working, try using different ports (e.g. an uncommon port somewhere between 20000 and 50000 or for comparison a common port like 80 or 8080) to see if that makes a difference.
First… on my router page, a port forward for plex was listed, i couldnt find out how to change the data (see pic). I changed it in Plex for the hell of it anyway and then tried to go to canyouseeme. My IP address on canyouseeme was incorrect AND it wouldnt let me change it, when i added the port i put in Plex (without changing it in my router) an error message came up.
When i changed the port forward in Plex, i noticed it didnt affect my router page in anyway, the info there stayed as in the pic above. I assume i have to not only put it in plex but somehow change it in my router setup? i tried editing the above info to no avail.
i went in and changed the port in my router to 50000 on both the external and internal range (was i supposed to do both?). Then i went into plex, it hadnt automatically changed so i clicked on manually and entered 50000. It wouldnt hold green it turned red. So i unclicked the manual button, it seems to hold green. When i try to go the canyouseeme site…it seems to always give me a different IP (and not mine, nor can i edit it), when i put in 50000 i always get an error message…says reason is timed out
Do as Otto says, set the external port to 50000, but leave the “Internal” port as 32400. Then, in Plex settings, go to remote access and punch in 50000 for the “Manually specify public port” box. Since you are expecting traffic outside your house to hit your router at 50000 now, you must tell Plex (the website, not your server) this.
In order to access your server when outside the house, other people’s video players need to know your house’s IP address. The best way to have this happen is for your SERVER to tell the Plex website itself what your home IP address is. Your server also tells the plex website what the port number that you opened up is. If you choose a different number than Plex is used to (which we are doing here by manually specifying 50000), your server doesn’t know that automatically. It isn’t able to log into your router to see that port forward entry. So you need to tell your server that you did this (used a manual port), so the server can tell the Plex website that you are using 50000, so the Plex website can tell any people connecting to your computer that they need to use port 50000. Yes, it’s kind of a roundabout way, but that is networking.
I’m curious though. What do you mean you went to the “CanYouSeeMe” site and the IP was incorrect? What IP were you expecting it to be? What leads you to think the IP seen on the site was wrong?
Okay i did all that, i have to wait until i get home from work and have someone access my server so we can test it.
When i check my IP address on my router or in windows it is 192.168.1.10. I assumed that was set. When i try to go to one of two sites canyouseeme and yougetsignal it automatically lists my external IP as something different 208. etc… on the latter site i was able to manually put in my IP address and port.
Even now both sites say my port 50000 is closed after making the above changes…
I just found out in my router config the 208 IP address is for my domain name server. Either way those two sites keep coming up as port 50000 as closed. I did notice something that seems weird, is it normal? In the pic you can see that my Server IP address doesnt have the “10” in the final box…
TY Both again for continuing to help me, this is very frustrating. I really want people to see quality stuff.
BTW I use a VPN which people have said messes with this whole process, so when i run my “tests” i close the VPN and the Plex Server software and basically reboot the whole system before logging back in and seeing if the system is working properly (without the VPN) so far no luck.
Could we have a double NAT situation here? (Crap, just saw the error message states that is might be) The OP being behind a router/modem from the ISP, and self-owned router as well?
If so, Docimotroy, do you know if there is ANOTHER router management page you have access to?
To check, go to the status page of the router you are in. What is the INTERNAL IP of the router? (It should be 192.168.1.1).
What is the IP GATEWAY of your router? (might be something like… 192.168.0.1)
I only have one router.
My internal IP is…192.68.1.10
My IP Gateway is… 192.168.1.1
I did notice in my router setup the button for TCP/UDP was selected, based upon the above info i changed it and selected the TCP Button only. Not sure if thats right either.
Hmm, the double NAT might be when you had a VPN enabled. If you turned that off, reboot the Plex server (not the computer, but the service). With VPN off, and a fresh startup, the server ought to hopefully report the routing to Plex and the check should go green and stay.
