Server Version#: Latest
Player Version#: Latest
I have a fairly generic question I want to ask the larger community, please stick with me through it.
In earlier versions of Plex (say mid 2017) I was able to stream 4K without issues, but now, running the latest version of Plex, the Plex app on my Vizio 4K tv no longer works (seperate issue, I’ve read the threads here, and basically came to the conclusion that due to a change on Vizio’s end, Plex has given up the development for my specific series of Vizio TV’s).
Here’s my player, it’s a PS4, so any files that are 4K would need to be transcoded. I know that’s an issue, but stick with me for a moment.
My network is a Cisco 3750X, and my server has 4x 1Gbe nic teaming connectivity. It’s working rock solid. My freenas box has a 2x 1Gbe nic team and it’s solid too. Everything is hardwired, I don’t use any WiFi for media. When I’m away from home, I’m on a fibre 1Gbps internet connection. It’s overkill and barely used, which is how I want it. When I want the speed, I want it.
My server is an HP dl380p with 2x Intel E5-2697 v2 CPU’s and 256GB ECC Ram. It’s running Windows Server 2012 R2.
When watching any of the 4K files which were H.265, the server kept buffering every 5 - 10 seconds, it was rather consistent. When I looked at the CPU load, it never rose above 40%. Here’s my question to the community, do the newer CPU’s transcode 4k any better? Where should I be looking to figure out if I have a technical issue, or a hardware limitation? Any help is appreciated.
