I’m wondering if there are any tools that allow me to see what my Plex server is doing (and has done). I am NOT asking about any plex client requests – instead I am interested in things like what file is currently being processed for thumbnail generation, how long did thumbnail generation take, what file is scheduled to be processed next (and when, if relevant) and other “behind the scenes” activity. In a perfect world, I would be able to click the Plex icon on my server and choose something like “Monitor Background Activity” to open a window that shows things like I’ve mentioned, active task progress, estimated completion times (if possible) and the like.
I’m always interested in things like this because there are times when I come home to find the drive access light(s) on the server flashing like mad even though there is no one home (and my server is NOT accessible from outside my home). I would love to know what is going on. I suspect that Plex is doing things like thumbnail generation for new media, but it would be great to know for sure.
If no tools exist, please tell me where I can find a log of this sort of activity and how to enable the logging. Also, if no tools exist, perhaps a Plex developer would be willing to contact me about exposing some status for info like this through shared (read-only) memory and I will write my own tool and share it with the community (at least – for the Windows users, since that’s where most of my programming skills are [after 30+ years writing Windows code])
