Plex and IP protection for QNAP

Server Version#:1.18.6.2368
Player Version#: Various
QTS 4.4.1.1146
I have a question on QNAP and the Allow/Deny list for IP protection.

If I select “allow connections from the list only” and add my local IP strings and the Plex servers would that allow others to log into Plex remotely?

Or would I need to also add each shared user’s IP in order for them to access the Plex server?

I am unclear on how exactly Plex does this and I am trying to increase the NAS security. I have had 3 brute force attacks all rebuffed. I have done all the changes QNAP recommends except disable the admin acocunt, which I would rather not do, as it makes things convenient to use it as the primary in my local network.

I have also looked up hardware/software firewall solutions but I prefer not to lose the bandwidth to be honest and not spend the money on it if I can find another solution. Any ideas?

Plex.tv (which is what originates the remote access) is the DDNS broker.

It has the server’s IP address.

The player goes to Plex.tv and looks for your Server
Plex.tv returns the last known IP address.
The player then attempts to connect to that IP address
If connection is successful, it authenticates.
If authentication is successful, the playback request is processed.
If allowed to view the requested content, PMS starts streaming the media to the player.

Your “Allowed IP” list would need the IP addresses of everyone you wish to allow which is very problematic because almost everyone has a ISP-provided DHCP address. By definition, those addresses can change at any moment. Your hand-crafted list would quickly become out of date.

You must also consider the access controls to come through your ISP modem/router’s firewall.

Thank you, I suspected as much though I am not nearly as sophisticated in my understanding. I appreciate the response.
