I have a Fire Tablet HD 8+ (and a 10+). Obviously, Fire OS is Android customized for Fire Tablets. I just noticed that the External Player option in Plex only works when installing Plex Android App version 9.30.0.3604. When I try updating Plex to a more recent (or the most recent) version, my TV show episodes, movies, etc. won’t load any of the external player apps on my device. The videos only load when I use Plex’s native Player. I can’t figure out why this is happening. I looked on the Plex Help Community Form site; here, and elsewhere, but I can’t find anyone else who has reported this problem. The External Players I tried are numerous; and include: VLC and MX Player. These are fairly popular, standard video player apps.
Am I doing anything wrong? I don’t think I am. Tried everything (i.e., reinstalling all affected apps, rebooting, etc.). I just think it’s an annoying bug that I found in the Plex app. No big deal to continue using an older version of Plex, but just wanted to reach out to see if anyone has come across this; and to see if anyone may have a solution to share.
I cannot reproduce the issueDid it open the external app but fail starting playback or just not open the external player at all? Have you looked at the external players logs? Did the external player show a particular error?
No, it failed to open the app at all. So playback is not started. It just reverts back to the Plex screening and Plex shows the episode playing in a minimized fashion. But nothing is playing. Very odd. No error logs are retained on the Video Player apps that I can find.
@rcolonna15 One of our QA guys was able to reproduce the issue on their testing Fire Tablet. I do not have any ETA on a fix. It appears it might be a permissions issue on Amazons custom version of Android but we are not positive
Just checking in. Sorry to be a bother. Was just curious if you have any additional information or update to share regarding the external player fix to Plex for Amazon Fire Tablets.
Since your last message, there’s been a minor Fire OS upgrade, but that upgrade didn’t address any potential permissions bugs. Plex, on both my Fire Tablet HD 8+ and HD 10+, still can’t launch any of the external player apps I have on those tablets.

Trying to get an update on a Bug I reported back on April first, related to the inability of Plex for Fire OS to launch External Players for videos.
