Hi there. Just curious if you are still having this problem. Been having this same problem, but only when I use my Amazon Fire Tablets. External Players can be launched, and work well, on all of other Android devices. Interesting that the problem is now occurring with other Android devices.

I reported the bug last year. Plex staff acknowledged it as a bug (which they said at the time was potentially a permissions malfunction), but had no timeframe on a fix. Given the amount of time that has past (and the number of new versions released since then), it may be that an actual fix hasn’t been identified yet.

It’s super frustrating. Especially since this, for me, is literally the only problem I’m having with Plex. It’s an outstanding app otherwise.

Hope we see a fix soon.

What I did was used older version of the Plex app on my android phone for Android 10 and 11 and the version which worked for me was 9.30.0

You can download it from apkmirror.com (this website has untouched app which means they don’t touch the apps nor change anything its pretty much the official app available)

With this I was able to watch media in external player

Thanks for the information!
Yes, that is correct.
Plex Version 9.30.0.3604 was the last known version where the External Players option worked as intended (on all known Android devices). However, the problem with that version was that it was buggy in other ways. For example, TV series season episodes would not immediately display. You had to force a page refresh repeatedly, and until it eventually did display.

Hey so I absolutely had forgotten about this but download app called vidhub from playstore and it has integration of many platforms where Plex is also available, this app was there for iOS and they released it for Android now for free and trust me I think this is the best imo, I don’t use my Plex that much only my family does, so didn’t even cross my mind and this kinda defeats the Plex app itself ig with its features

I am having this same issue on my tablet. Especially since downloading file does transcode them shoo you have to rely on an external player. It is really frustrating that these two issues combine to make the offline mobile experience nearly unusable.

Thanks for the tip! It’s a great app. Except, when scanning my libraries, it doesn’t pick up all of my 110 TV Shows. All of my TV Show folders, files and names are correctly formatted. The First scan picks up 46. The next scan picks up an additional 30, and the third scan grabs maybe only 5 more. Very odd. That all said, the video player is great. Lots of important features. Like Audio Delay (similar to MX Player and VLC), which allows audio/video synch with just about every wireless earbud device. Hopefully, they’ll iron out the kinks in future versions, because it is a good app, even though you lose certain cool feature Plex already has (i.e., TV Show Theme Songs and Skip Intro). Thanks again for the great tip!

Agree. And you raise an interesting point. Transcoding may impact the audio video synch to the Plex player, especially when using wireless earbuds. I’m hoping the Plex team has an ETA on a fix soon. Reached out several times, but haven’t heard back.

To that point, I believe the most important benefit of using a choice of an external player is the ability of these players to synch audio and video to just about every wireless headphone device. Plex’s internal player cannot synch audio and video, because it doesn’t have that feature. So you wind up having to either use wired headphones (if your device still supports that feature), or try to find wireless earbuds that synch well with the Plex player.

All that said, a win-win scenario for Plex, of course, would be to enhance its existing player with at least an Audio Delay feature. Making their player a bit more appealing. In that scenario, the feature would allow for proper alignment of audio and video, even after a video transcode.

Hoping Plex can find us a good solution to this problem soon.
