Just purchased a Dell XPS 13. I cannot run the latest Plex media player. It’s terribly sluggish and movies will barely run. I’m running my Plex server off of a Synology DS418play. I have that set as a Plex server as well as an Nvidia Shield. The Plex player will not play off of the Shield, and will barely play off of the NAS. The app itself is painfully slow. I’ve seen reports of similar problems on laptops.
Plex works fine on my Windows 10 desktop, Macbook Pro, iPad, and Pixel 3 phone.
As a personal opinion, I did not have many issues with the Plex player before v3.0. The latest Plex player has mostly seemed like a downgrade and created issues that never existed. One of which is thumbnail sizes on a 4k display (yes I’ve done the “fix” listed and it did not work for me permanently).
Plex Web Player isn’t a download; what’s available as a download is Plex for Windows / Mac. It “looks” like the web player and every other UNO client but on the backend is mpv for much better video playback.
To clarify:
I am talking specifically about the PMP. Not the web app.
The web player works okay on the XPS, but not does not have as good of playback as my other devices. It will see movies on my shield but will not play them. The web player UI does itself does not have lag issues like on PMP. The web player is also not ideal as it cannot do things like HDR tone mapping.
Other services such as Netflix, Prime Video and Vudu do not have issues on the XPS. That includes the Netflix app on Windows 10. 4K Youtube videos will also play fine.
