Plex App Crashing When Opening Photos

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Put 2 images into a photo library
  2. Attach “example_tag” to both images
  3. Apple TV Plex will crash when viewing either of the now tagged images.

I have never tagged any of my 26000 photos, but yet Plex crashes on Apple TV. I tried to view some of my photos on iPhone, works fine. Until I Airplay the photos to my Apple TV. The entire iPhone screen everything shows. But when I start to view photos, the tv screen goes black. Nothing crashes. Works fine to view movies on Airplay, but not photos. Maybe there is a connection …

I have the same issue, though I think it’s because AirPlay for photos is broken on iOS Plex, and it’s not related to the Apple TV Plex app as AirPlay works even if you don’t have it installed.

It’s working again !! Don’t know what has been done, I have not tried or done anything. But now everything works. All my pictures is showing fine in Plex on Apple Tv.

Hope it’ll get fixed on my end soon as well, I’m still experiencing this issue after updating the Plex apps.

The issue has been fixed after i updated the plex app on apple tv to version 8.20.
Finally the devs may have fixed the bug.

Thanks for the feedback - I tried to repro today and managed to view the timeline - a photo library with circa 15,000 photos. I did have an issue where the remote control stopped responding after viewing and exiting a large library folder - I will follow this up. May be a different issue

Update: If the problem returns where the app exits or locks up, in addition to the server logs and Apple TV Plex logs, please also look for diagnostics files created by the tvOS as well for the time of the issue. These can be found through the Apple TV Settings

Settings → General → Privacy & Security → Analytics And Improvements - Analytical Data

Then scroll through the list of .ips files and find all that mention Plex and also have a timestamp in the filename that corresponds to the time before / at lockup / crash

Select each and then select Share
You can airdrop to a mac or ios device

Then collate all the relevant .ips files, zip and include with the server logs and apple tv plex logs zips

I’m still encountering a similar crash, though in my case it’s due to having tags attached to images, hope that’s something you could look into as well. Reproduction steps are in #22.

Plex Media Server Logs_2023-06-05_17-35-42.zip (99.1 KB)
PlexTV-2023-06-05-173414.ips.zip (8.3 KB)
logging.zip (17.0 KB)

The ips file shows a crash at "captureTime" : "2023-06-05 17:34:14.4816 +0300",
but the Plex for Apple TV loggings.zip has only 1 log file and it start at 2023/06/05 17:34:18.389 which i think is the restart after the crash

could you try to get the logs a few times and see if the logging.zip does start to have more log files

I need to see the log leading up to the crash time

How did you establish it is to do with tags ?
(i may need a copy of your server database (download database zip in plex web and send me privately - would need to be uploaded externally and link PM’ed to me)

Sure thing, here’s the updated set of files, I’ve verified that the ATV logs before the crash are also present.

PlexTV-2023-06-09-002130.ips.zip (8.3 KB)
Plex Media Server Logs_2023-06-09_00-26-48.zip (143.6 KB)
logging.zip (98.3 KB)

(database sent via PM)

I’ve also found a line that seems relevant to the crash:

2023/06/09 00:21:30.512 (176 MB) (702381) ❌ PMKMetadataController.m:124 | Assertion failure in -[PMKMetadataController initWithMetadata:], /Volumes/workspace/repository/PlexKit/PMKMetadataController.m:124. Reason: 'Invalid parameter not satisfying: metadata'

I’ve established that this is related to tags by spinning up a new Plex server for testing, adding two photos to it and tagging both of them with a few similar tags through Plex Web. Viewing either of those photos using the app immediately crashes it.

Thank you very much for the diagnostics and the test database - I have reproduced the crash using the database from the server and I have referred it to the Plex for Apple TV/Plex for iOS development team

8.23.1: still crashing when viewing tagged photos. Kind of unbelievable that two months have passed already, and there’s been no movement on this at all, for what is seemingly an easy enough fix for an issue that hard-crashes the app.

Worse yet, I’ve recently found out that Plex is forcibly transcoding my photos to 1080p on all devices (including Apple TV 4K!), and there’s no way to disable this. Not even through server profiles and hidden .plist settings, and as others pointed out, this is done on the server and not the clients. It seems clear that Plex doesn’t care about the photo feature anymore, and it’s unfortunate because I really enjoyed using it in the past.

I expect the fix to be in the 8.24 release which is beta now

Plex for Apple TV version 8.24 has been released and it has a fix for this crash
