Plex app for Panasonic Smart Viera

I haven't started an AJAX-CE version yet, and I don't think I'm going to. Thank you all for your support (I see a lot of FB posts), but this experience has been very frustrating. I have been wrongly accused of "hacking" several times, despite using the same methods available in their SDK & tutorials (jQuery and XMLHttpRequest). I have provided exact details about how the app works and the entire source code was made available to them, but they continue to claim that what I was doing was impossible without hacking. That is an ignorant and 100% false statement, and I frankly have been insulted by such accusations.

I completely regret my Panasonic VIERA purchase. I have a smaller Samsung TV in my basement and the Plex app works wonderfully on that. Since I am stuck with my Panasonic, I have resigned myself to use a Roku and will probably not pursue any further Panasonic VIERA development.

That's a shame but I for one can understand your frustration at their lack of understanding of their own SDK. How they can claim you were hacking when you were following their own explicit guidelines and tutorials I've no idea. The conspiracy theorist in me wants to think they've started work on their own that they'll want to monetise, but that's too paranoid surely?

Like many here, I doubt Panasonic will be anywhere on my list come my next TV purchase.

Thanks for your efforts, and sometimes it's better for your sanity to just let the idiots get on with it.

I know you might not want to do this but are you open to providing your source code so someone else can carry on the fight with what you have done so far? It's a long shot but if you are potentially interested please drop me a DM. I am sure we can get a group of people together to keep the pressure up and we can perhaps resubmit and keep going.

Thanks again for all your hard work on this!

Edwin

I just started to use Plex and I'm not familiar with Plex API.

I'm reading that Panasonic is rejecting app because of XMLHttpRequest  requests which I agree is very strange.

I just tried to call simple URLs to Plex media server like:

    http://127.0.0.1:32400/library/sections

    http://127.0.0.1:32400/library/sections/1/all

    ....

and I see that as response I get an XML which can be parsed easily.

Maybe we don't need to use AJAX requests via XMLHttpRequest object and can use hidden iframe to make request to Plex server.

We can listen to iframe onload event and fetch xml content from iframe document.

Sorry if I'm totally of the track but this is just a suggestion as I'm very interested that Plex app for Panasonic comes out

I am so sorry to hear that you are not going to continue with this project.

However I can understand given the thick headed attitude of Panasonic why you have come to this decision.

How on earth can Panny expect any developer to follow their guidelines when they apparently have no understanding of this themselves?

Given the few apps available for the platform it would appear that Panny are killing off SmarTViera from the inside.

As for Plex - I've just ordered a Chromecast.

I do hope that another developer can pick up the mantle and push this forward as we all would love a native app.

VieraApp, thanks for your efforts. I sympathize. I have one question, since these idiots already accused you of hacking, how do you think one could actually pull that off? I mean, really hack it. Does anyone release "custom" Panasonic firmware, that could, perhaps, include some really useful apps, like Plex? This is just a theoretical question, I hope a mere thought does not infringe anything, god forbid.

Yikes, that's frustrating :(

That’s the thing. I’m a web developer and know next-to-nothing about firmware hacking. I wouldn’t even know where to start. I was just using standard web techniques. It’s sad that Panasonic couldn’t grasp relatively basic Web 2.0 concepts.

Just ordered a Roku Streaming Stick.

What do You think of my suggestion or You don't have any wish to continue with this?

I have been reading with interest and the best thing Panasonic could do is move to android for the os. Without content on smart TVs they are not worth anything. Having purchased a big 65" specifically to use with plex I was very ticked off with Panasonic over this debacle with the plex app. I was out yesterday looking for another big screen for another room and it will not be Panasonic - more than likely samsung with get my future business.

Sorry to hear that VieraApp, but I completely understand your decision.

This is pretty ■■■■ by Panasonic, and really kills the SmartTV platform if they're too stupid to understand their own system.

I guess I'll stick with my HTPC connected directly to my TV, was hoping to change to a NAS and stream it.

I think a great many of us who have followed this sorry tale will also be thinking long and hard when the time comes to buy new tv's.

I bought mine knowing that Plex wasn't available but was just around the corner. Now Panasonic have stopped VieraApp in his tracks by accusing him of "hacking". So this is a decision I now regret.

When I wrote to Panasonic they said there was "no demand" for a Plex app. Well I think this forum proves the opposite.

I've bought a Chromecast now. Yes Plex supports it and it works, but it is not the same as a native app in the tv itself using the tv remote. Which is what I want to see, and use!

Panasonic if you are monitoring this forum - do something about it! Assist developers - don't put up barriers that don't really exist. You are damaging your brand, and making people look elsewhere such as Samsung who's tv's have a far greater number of apps available, because they know (like the mobile phone manufactures) that content is King!

Yes, well. I was a long time Panasonic plasma advocate. Now that their panels are gone all the allure dissolves without a trace. With the "content" factor so severely lacking, I wonder who they're planning to win, considering the competition has already surpassed then in many ways.

Pity to see plasma-geniuses turn content-idiots, really.

Hi all,

Is this 'us'?:

http://developers.slashdot.org/story/14/02/05/2328224/html5-app-for-panasonic-tvs-rejected---jquery-is-a-hack

I see some suggestions on how to wrap the code in something that might not be considered a hack, perhaps VieraApp can give us an update if there were some helpful ones?

Really hope we can see a spark of life in this beautiful project!

Panasonic changed their story after that Slashdot submission.  At that point, they objected to the jQuery $.ajax call.  So I removed jQuery and used XMLHttpRequest directly.  Then they "clarified" their position and said that XMLHttpRequest was also not legal and considered a "hack".  Both of these are used in their tutorial.

I really think you should request an escalation of this issue with Panasonic, to get the issue addressed at a higher level than the muppets that you have been dealing with.

How can they use methodologies in their tutorials and then dispute their use?

Ridiculous.

I am willing to help if I can.

@VieraApp

If you like you can share you're code via SVN or Git, with limited access of course, so we can help you

Yes, once again I strongly support the idea of escalation. Has this been tried?

As a footnote, I will NEVER EVER buy any Panasonic product again until this case is resolved with due diligence. Really, there are TONS of alternatives, so no hard feelings. I'd rather support a company that gives a little more damn. I will also actively disencourage anyone seeking TV/AV advice from using Panasonic products. And I do this for a living. Extrapolate. This is my darned protest.

Bummer, I was really hoping for a Plexapp for Viera...

I give up on the app. Just using DLNA, and I just got a Chromecast that works so nice
