lol, thanks for your answers. I’ll report back tomorrow (assuming Apple hits the approve button) on how eAC3 works on my setup. I look forward to it.
Yes, please report back. And please provide details on the hack to get this working. This is what I’m looking for before I buy the ATV4.
I can’t wait for this. I’m not buying the new ATV until Plex is available in the app store, then the Fire TV will go to a friend or family member.
For me, universal search would be nice, but I don’t see it as a killer feature I need. Just a solid native Plex app on ATV is what I want/need.
Let me slip this in since Elan is active in the thread; a bit off-topic… I only have one feature request: please add proper movie collections functionality. I’d love to have my collections stacked, as we see in XBMC/Kodi. Makes navigation much nicer, IMO. Beyond that, I’m astonished at how Plex does everything I need. It’s making me lazy; I used to painstakingly name all my media to a specific format. Plex doesn’t really care about the format of the filenames I throw at it - if it can find a title and a year, it’s happy and downloads metadata beautifully. So easy. I do occasionally look at my libraries and my OCD kicks in and have to fire up FileBot to clean it up, although that is totally unneccesary.
I am an insufferable Plex evangelist. I’ve turned dozens of people on to it, and I directly support my friends and family. This would not be something I’d want to do with Kodi - great product, and a settings-tweaker’s dream, but it’s not like Plex in that Plex just ■■■■■■■ works. Thank you, Plex team.
As someone who hasn’t purchased an Apple device since the 4th generation iPod Touch I find this thread fascinating to follow! Also impressed with how quickly an app was thrown together. I’m assuming large portions of the underlying iOS codebase could be re-purposed. Granted the UI is completely new…

First time poster, been a Plex Pass subscriber for 6 months, but just had to agree with this. So many people still want media devices which support Kodi, but I just ask why?
Seriously, Plex has made my media organisation and playback so much easier, and what’s better, is that it’s across so many devices, it’s unbelievable.
Glad to see Elan so active in here, and that it didn’t take long to throw together an ATV4 app
Fingers crossed for Day 1 App final approval and congratulations.
Bought Plex Pass to show support.
My ATV4 is with local courier on delivery run and should be here (Tokyo) in an hour or two.

Thanks for the kind words, and acknowledged; we’ve done a bit of thinking about how to do this, but it’s slightly tricky. But know that we’re tracking internally.

So I guess I missed the bus on Plex transcoding audio to DD+ (eac3). What bitrate does it encode to?
DD, no plus, as there is no encoder for it. It should be able to pass through (e)AC3 fine, though. I’m not sure what the bitrate of AC3 we target offhand, probably 640kbps or whatever it is.

Still in review. I think I’m personally DDoSing iTunesConnect with all the refreshes. (And yes, I know push notifications work.)
You need a live feed of your screen on auto refresh, so we can just watch that instead of refreshing this page constantly waiting for your to say it got through. lol
I don’t post on forums much but I can’t wait to see the Plex app out on an aTV. It is a match made in heaven. There are some things in life that are just meant to work together, this is one such example.
I haven’t been active in the Plex forums in the past, but I stumbled on this thread and it has satisfied almost all of my questions regarding Plex for Apple TV. Thanks everyone for asking awesome questions and thanks elan for keeping us up to date. Can’t wait to see what you have come up with.
Wouldn’t it be nice if someone from app review was active in this thread

Aren’t you using ffmpeg on the backend to support transcoding? Because that definitely supports eAC3 encoding.
Don’t mean to be such a pest, I’d just like for the server to be able to give me the highest reasonable possible quality version of something when it does have to transcode. As of today, eAC3 is that for audio.
