I was excited about this but Apple’s insistence for 50hz/60hz output on the ATV kills it for me. I think I’m going to have to go with a Raspberry Pi 2/PMP solution once PMP is a bit more to my liking.
Getting my ATV4 today, fingers crossed for Plex on it soon!
…audio is my biggest concern too. You mention passthrough does that mean DTS/DTSHD will pass through? Guess I’ll find out soon enough though.
Cheers!
Adam
Mine has arrived, just waiting for Plex, hardly anything in the UK App Store for TV. US gets all the good stuff first
one thing to note, even though i set correct date time, i still get ‘Night’ screen savers of US

No, at least not as I understand it. This new Apple TV only supports Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus. Meaning that Plex Media Server will transcode as needed into a format that the Apple TV supports. Officially, for now, that is only Dolby Digital which peaks at 5.1 channels with a 640kbps bitrate.
…and now we play the waiting game

Don’t mean to be such a pest, I’d just like for the server to be able to give me the highest reasonable possible quality version of something when it does have to transcode. As of today, eAC3 is that for audio.
That is my understanding as well. It would be excellent if DD+ became an option for transcode as the bitrate and encoding quality is substantially improved over DD.
Here are some popular lossy formats with encoders listed that FFmpeg can use:
Dolby Digital: ac3
Dolby Digital Plus: eac3
MP2: libtwolame, mp2
Windows Media Audio 1: wmav1
Windows Media Audio 2: wmav2
LC-AAC: libfdk_aac, libfaac, aac, libvo_aacenc
HE-AAC: libfdk_aac, libaacplus
Vorbis: libvorbis, vorbis
MP3: libmp3lame, libshine
Opus: libopus

The screen savers seem to depend on what time it is in the location of the video. Like I’ll see the day flyovers of London when it’s still night here.
VPN to US will get you all the goodies

Can you change the VPN within the AppleTV or does it have to be done at the router?

Expect progress on this, yes.
Thanks Elan, I’m relieved to hear that this feature on the table. It has been a feature request for so long that I started to lose all hope. Now I’m confident enough to leave my files as they are and keep my NAS.
The feature would be a really big deal. It would make a lot of users very happy. I know you can’t give an ETA, but do you think it would be possible within a year?
Picking mine up from the Apple Store around lunchtime - Plex better be out by then or there will be trouble
I’m not spending one buck until I’m sure it’s released for the Apple TV. And, yeah, I COULD always return it…but then there’s a 3-5 day wait for it to drop off my card. And after purchasing a new 5k iMac…can’t have $$$ held up for no reason.
I will get one from work either tomorrow or Sunday I think
My 4th gen is shipping, guessing it’ll turn up on Monday, so fingers crossed we’ll see a little something on the App Store
It’s painful waiting for Apple to make a decision on things.
Ok can the plex support pls be nr 1 prio atm? Shame it isn’t ready to go already. Great, thx … waiting … :!!
I’m eagerly awaiting the release of Plex for Apple TV 4!!! My mouth has been watering ever since Apple announced the new ATV will have an app store and after seeing and using the awesome Roku interface I’m just anxious as heck to get my hands on ATV + Plex!
I would think that this shouldn’t be too far into the future considering there is already an IOS version of Plex out there, much of that code is reusable for ATV (I’m a programmer and write Mac/IOS apps).
Hurry Plex, hurry, I’m like a kid on Christmas Eve :).
Can’t wait for the official plex app. Simplex is doing the trick till then though
Cool for simplex
what does it do with DTS HD and DD+ ?

It’s Apple taking forever, not them. They’ve submitted/re-submitted 3+ times already.
What did Simplex do that got it through the door?
