Plex App on NEW Apple TV App Store

@elan You guys better be seeing some of that Simplex money! lol jk.

I was so looking forward to using Plex on my new Apple TV, I’m sure it will be great once it’s approved!

Where Apple are, and will probably forever be, stubborn is in denying support for features that they don’t consider to be relevant like the more modern audio codecs, and 24p output. That will always hamper our Plex friends in being able to make apps like this as good as they can possibly be and that’s deeply frustrating as it seems like we take one step forward and three steps back with these kind of devices (the 24p issue puts me off the Apple TV almost entirely, or at the very least leaves it to be a device most likely to be relegated to a bedroom rather than take pride of place in a living room). How the “future” of content delivery comes in stripping away features we’ve been used to for almost a decade now via physical media I’ll never know…

Its weird. You’d think Apple could at least support passthrough even if they didn’t care to deal with licensing of additional codecs.

It makes me wonder how Apple will support UltraHD in the future. Support 4k , but not HDR, wider gamut and HFR?

And it reinforces me feeling that long term a android stb like the Shield is the better long term way to go. If only it had better app support.

Thanks for the reply , how is Netflix doing it, it’s a 3rd party app?

Netflix is a big player, as are HBO and HULU. Of course they get preferential access - they’re the products people already use and want the feature with. Plex, while wonderful, is not so widely adopted. IT’S UP TO US TO SPREAD THE WORD. Anyone who knows me, knows about Plex.

Well it’s Friday evening and I doubt Apple’s reviewers are working over the weekend (maybe, since it’s launch weekend?), so I’m guessing we won’t see an approval until at least Monday.

same here , In hindsight plex is not doing to shabby, theres almost not a single tv, pc, os, or device that plex does not have there app on, TBH i think apple tv was the only one and now its here :D. anyway im looking forward to this app, I sincerely hope we get the ability to use the voice cmds features of on it in the near future, using them on netflix is a “wow” moment in and of its self! could you imagine how amazing this would be for us if we could use voice with our entire collections (wow exuberafied!!) lol

Simple X already has bad reviews!

Took me a bit to get it working and it has a few bugs, though have got it to play everything, though the dev seems to be active with it, so hopefully will iron out the niggles, though it shows you something similar to Plex got through the approval process, strange the main Plex app, available on everything else on the planet, along with iPads, iPhones, they are being strict with

Apple have the same rules for everyone, if you break them you fail the review process. Elan admitted they broke simple ones around weblinks. Simplex obviously didn’t break any rules while Plex did, there is no big conspiracy going on to stop them having an app.

I imagine they had some links back to the Plex website to sell Plex Passes that were cutting out Apples 30% and they have had to change those to comply with the rules surrounding selling stuff when bypassing Apples cut. It’s been resubmitted so if they didn’t break any other rules it should be available in the next few days.

Plex is the ONE app that Apple probably doesn’t want on the aTV. They want you to get all of your content from iTunes…

That’s simply not true. If it were, Apple would be very resistant to Netflix and Hulu.

I’m loving my new ATV - it’s a pretty cool device. There are some UI issues, but I’ll assume they will be fixed up later on.

Really looking forward to the Plex App on the ATV. It’s gonna be sweet :))

If that is the point that would really suck a lot … we’ll have to miss the start of the new apple tv cause plex wants to sell some passes? X(
I mean come on you don’t have to be a “pro” to know apple don’t like this bs, they already kicked bigger apps like the kindle app out of their store for that …

Even if the official Plex app comes out today. I won’t begrudge the £2.50 I spent on Simplex. It does the job, and for me it has worked much better than the ATV3/PlexConnect combo I was using until yesterday. It is great to be able to browse play stuff from PMS and rewind / fast-forward like it’s the 21st century without having to pull the plug on it every 30 minutes (not that I’m knocking the PlexConnect devs, the app did the best it could under the circumstances)

Still waiting for PLEX to be approved. I was just buying a new mac mini for my home cinema set, but i’ll wait to hear your feedback about the new Plex-ATV 4tg gen combo.
Got a question?. My media manager is in a 2014 mac pro: Will I get the same fluidity, transfer velocity running the plex home teather in a mac mini , than in the new aTV?. Let me explain… is the hardware’s ram or GPU of the item that runs the media player (mac mini vs apple TV), an important difference in term of quality?
Thank a lot, and thanks to @elan for you effort!!!

Any news on the app

I got this from one of the plex people, can’t wait!

We’ve submitted our app and are anxiously awaiting approval from Apple. We’ll post on Twitter and FB as soon as we hear.

Right. Same as they’ve been posting to this thread

I’m not sure anything is going to happen over the weekend. Let’s all relax and come back on Monday

On a side note, verdict on new Apple TV, boats still out for me, feels it’s still in beta for me, not sure about the remote, plastic click buttons not up to apples normal build quality.

You need to use the trackpad and voice control more ;^) But I was surprised too that I couldn’t just tap the trackpad but had to click it instead…
