Plex App on NEW Apple TV App Store

Stupid Apple?
A single guy released a Plex Client directly at launch day. Seems to be no problem at all if the given Apple rules are respected.

The old metal remote still works. Probably not for everything but my wife prefers it and she’s been using it even though I’m trying to get her used to the new one. Some people don’t like change

And, FWIW, having Speediest on the ATV is awesome for troubleshooting video streaming. I’m getting 200+mbit over my AC wireless. I think I can finally stream from Plex at full quality.

OT post:
How did u manage to use speedtest to check your wifi speed? Does your internet connection exceeds AC wifi speed? :stuck_out_tongue:

Well no, I wish I could get GBIt internet however just knowing I can get 200+mbit to my ATV is enough to confirm that I don’t have any issues with my wifi signal, interference from my neighbors etc.

the Plex guys have been submitting apps to apple for quite some time. I don’t think they intentionally tried to break rules, but creating an app with great features and staying on the right side of app reviews line is a balancing act. The app they are submitting is much more complex than then Simplex. Most apps have to submit multiple times before their app is approved. I may have misplaced faith in Plex devs but I don’t think so.

Has anyone had any issue with the learning IR commands feature? I have a Samsung Soundbar. I use the learning feature and point the Samsung remote at the apple TV. It says it has learned the IR code. I then try to use my Apple remote to change the volume, but nothing.

I have ensured that the newly learned device is the selected one for sound, but nothing. The Apple remote however seem to change my TV volume without issue over HDMI. Very weird.

I don’t think that they tried to break rules, also!

But as Elan wrote:
“It’s nothing nefarious, it’s just around certain nuances of the rules around linking to your website in certain contexts.”

Would the official Plex App have been approved without that “nuances of the rules around linking to their website”?

Edit: Nevermind, I missed the post explaining. Nothing to see here!

Not sure what this has to do with Plex – you’ll probably get plenty of help about this at the Apple forums

Regarding this:

Welcome to HDMI-CEC – it’s grand!

Well-said.

Hate to ask but you’re pointing the remote at the IR speaker right? Not the Apple TV?

Programmed mine in with a Sony soundbar and it worked fine.

Been refreshing this forum for the last couple of days…can’t believe it’s still not on the App Store!

Hey guys. How do I turn off notifications? I thought I did, however I’m still getting updates. I woke up to like 20 email updates from this thread. I like updates but that’s a little excessive lol.

Or can I not because I’m OP?

I also get a crazy number of notifications for this thread. I kind of like them, so I have created a seperate ‘Plex’ label in Gmail.

What’s more complex about it?

Of course, apps get rejected for all sorts of reasons. In my opinion it isn’t the lack of approval that’s the problem but the lack of communication. A blog post should have been forthcoming last week. Unless you read the forums there is no visibility that an official Plex app is imminent or in the works at all.

Right now, Simplex is working great. It deserves to do well. It would do even better it Apple got their TVOS App Store sorted so one could actually find it!

I look forward to seeing what the official App can do. Perhaps it will have a Composers tag so that music actually becomes usable!

SimpleX is actually quite nice. Well worth the $3. AirPlay is fine but not everyone wants to use an iDevice to control another one.

Have a little patience. Do you have an iPad or iPhone? You can still watch content by doing AirPlay.

I wouldn’t give the SimpleX developer a dime…

Works great for me. Even my Harmony Smart Control system works fine except for the keyboard pairing issue. SimpleX has worked better than Plex on my Fire TV so I am really looking forward to the official PleX app. The remote is interesting. Still prefer my Harmony but the Apple remote feels solid to me. Am slowly adjusting to it. The volume and power/on controls worked with no fiddling. If Amazon Instant Video were on there I’d have no need for any other media player.

On a side note, verdict on new Apple TV, boats still out for me, feels it’s still in beta for me, not sure about the remote, plastic click buttons not up to apples normal build quality.

For starters, I’m guessing it will deal with more content types (music and photos).

They’re pretty consistent about NOT announcing things in advance on their blog. Good policy if you ask me, less bozos commenting on things they know little (or nothing) about.

zing! :))

Lets hope it works a little better than the new iOS app and we don’t have to wait for several point releases for things to work

@elan Hey elan, I was at a Halloween party in Los Gatos last night and several Plex staff members were there wearing Plex hats and t-shirts, they were quite surprised that I knew all about Plex. I gave them a hard time and said “when is that damn ATV4 app coming out?”

Maybe they were just dressed as Plex Devs for Halloween.
