Plex App on NEW Apple TV App Store

They’re pretty consistent about NOT announcing things in advance on their blog. Good policy if you ask me, less bozos commenting on things they know little (or nothing) about.

Usually yes. But in this case I think not, certainly in my experience in running a (successful) development team

Has anyone had any issue with the learning IR commands feature? I have a Samsung Soundbar. I use the learning feature and point the Samsung remote at the apple TV. It says it has learned the IR code. I then try to use my Apple remote to change the volume, but nothing.

I have ensured that the newly learned device is the selected one for sound, but nothing. The Apple remote however seem to change my TV volume without issue over HDMI. Very weird.

You’re thinking of it the wrong way round. It’s for learning other remotes. For example, I just programmed in my existing receiver remote which has spare buttons.

The AppleTV can control the device it is connected to through HDMI CEC.

Elan : Is the app going to be a universal iOS app, or will it be a standalone ATV version?

From what Elan has revealed of the planned app, its a dedicated standalone app.

But perhaps the iOS app will have optimisation’s for controlling the ATV app and casting to it?

From what I understand the Video Toolbox framework is not available at the moment for the Apple TV. How it will impact Plex, what is the limitation on the video format?

Is an interesting point. I wonder how SimpleX handled it? Can you use Metal similar to DirectX in that you can access the hardware for video rendering? I don’t develop on iOS, but just guessing.

No, he’s right. You can program your new Apple TV remote to control the volume for pretty much anything. I can control the volume on my 10 year old Logitech Z-5500 5.1 system that I use for my home theater.

You go into the remote settings on the Apple TV and choose the option to program for volume and it tells you to point the remote for whatever you want to control at the Apple TV and hold the volume up button until the progress bar is complete and then do the same thing for volume down. Once you’ve done that you can now use the Apple TV to control volume even if your TV/receiver/whatever doesn’t support HDMI-CEC.

Plex will trans code on the fly, so unless I am misunderstanding the question, which is possible :)) I believe the limitation of the ATV4 isn’t a problem. Maybe down the road we will be able to move more to direct play, which I would prefer, but not at launch.

Just like to point out Simplex is the number 2 paid app on the AppleTV store (http://www.macrumors.com/2015/11/02/top-apple-tv-apps/). There was some talk earlier of Apple not knowing or caring about Plex customers because there aren’t many of us but surely this shows that’s not the case.

Ok, but as I run the PMS on a NAS (DS412+) who is not powerful enough to transcode my big 1080p MKV this will be a problem with the ATV4 and that I better have to keep my mac mini to run Plex HT?

Still in review… so sorry for the delay :frowning:

At least it isn’t rejected. I have 3 new ATVs waiting to be Plexed

I’m flabergasted by the review process
But it’s not the first time

iSub has the same issue of validation for exemple

You can’t help but think Apple would be considering how not to have PLEX in the store. Presumably they will reject on the basis of the channels? Perhaps the web issues are how plex deals with the server of WAN or what ever.

I can think of many things Apple would not want, but then I am growing pessimistic and must remain positive.

Perhaps it’s time for me to look into a new TV…

My LG soundbar is connected via optical cable, AppleTV turns on TV and the optical signal turns on the sound bar then the aTV remote controls the volume of the sound bar. Same in reverse when putting the aTV to sleep, it turns off the TV which removes audio signal and turns off the sound bar.
Pretty nifty. and that is a 3-4yr old TV and sound bar so nothing brand new.
