Congratulations guys! It’s incredible what you’ve accomplished in such a short period of time!
for those not fortunate enough to have purchased an apple tv yet…
does a movie / tv show / artist detail page still contain the background fan art or is the app a uniform colour throughout?
edit: the app looks beautiful looking at some screenshots. excellent work @elan and plex team!!

Note: For people with 5.1 or larger setups…go into settings in the apple tv and change audio from auto to dolby ss. If its set to auto, it will output as PCM to the receiver. You have to force it to output as DD. Also, DD is the highest it will output. No DTS-HD or TrueHD or blah blah blah.

I have DTS being sent through with no trans-coding done by the server. It hits the receiver at multi channel but I assume that its just passing through the audio. So doesn’t that mean it’s DTS?
Is it possible for anyone to explain which audio choice is better? Auto or Dolby Surround?
Auto causes my receiver to report “multi-channel in”
Dolby Surround causes it to report Dolby Digital 5.1, but it forces everything in other apps to this and I think there may be some downsides.
What do the Plex gods say is best to choose while using Plex?
Has anyone tried to stream recordings from Windows Media Center? They start to play in the server logs and then immidately stop. These will work with the Simplex App and other Plex Clients.
Is anyone else unable to change the audio tracks under the settings tab for an individual movie? I’m unable to do this with every single title in my library.
Also, where might we find both the AppleTV OS version number and the Plex app version number if reporting a bug?
I ran a few tests just to see what happens. In the ATV4 Settings my Audio was set to Dolby Surround but changing it auto didn’t seem to change anything. Also, the handling of the file was pulled with PlexPy since the Activity pane in Plex always said Direct Play and it definitely was not always right.
1080p MP4 H.264/AVC file (High@L4 and 4456 Kbps) with AC3 5.1 (384 Kbps) - The video was played with Direct Play and Direct Stream for the audio
1080p MP4 H.264/AVC file (High@L4 and 5118 Kbps) with AC3 5.1 (384 Kbps) with CC subtitles enabled (embedded EIA-608) - The video was played with Direct Play and Direct Stream for the audio
1080p MP4 H.264/AVC file (High@L4.1 and 5030 Kbps) with AC3 5.1 (640 Kbps) - The video was played with Direct Play and Direct Stream for the audio
1080p MP4 H.264/AVC file (High@L4.1 and 5030 Kbps) with AC3 5.1 (640 Kbps) with subtitles enabled (embedded tx3g) - The video was played with Transcoded Video and Direct Stream for the audio
**720p results with MP4s were the same as 1080p
1080p MKV H.264/AVC file (High@L4.1 and 23902 Kbps) with DTS HD-MA 7.1 (5461 Kbps) - The video was played with Direct Stream (there was a little stuttering for some parts but generally pretty good) and the audio was transcoded to AC3 5.1
1080p MKV H.264/AVC file (High@L4.1 and 23902 Kbps) with DTS HD-MA 7.1 (5461 Kbps) with subtitles enabled (PSG) - The video was played with Transcoded Video and the audio was transcoded to AC3 5.1
720p MPG MPEG-TS (Main@High and 10.7 Mbps) with AC3 5 (384 Kbps) - The video was played with Transcoded Video and Direct Stream for the audio
1080p MPG MPEG-TS (Main@High) and 9168 Kbps) with AC3 5.1 - The video was played with Transcoded Video and Direct Stream for the audio
**for the MPEG-TS file it did not read the subtitles that were in the mpg container
New app works great!!! I played my test 18GB 1080P file and it works fantastic. The only other device that was able to play it was my Mac Mini.
The media server maybe used 10% at most.
Seems like I’ve been waiting for this for such a long time, what with a jailbroken aTV2 and then an aTV3 and PlexConnect
Needed to update my PMS which was remarkably quick and painless but I now have Plex running on my aTV4 - HALLELUJAH =D>
Need to sleep, so will play some more tomorrow, but first impressions look good…

IT WAS JUST APPROVED!(Should show up shortly…)
Yay!
When can we expect a blog post with pictures for those of us that don’t have one yet?
It’s Alive!
Just jumped into purchases tab and oh look, Plex is there
Looking great so far. ~~One weird issue though, not able to select AC3 5.1 audio for a few m4v files that I have. The option is there, I move over it, press to select, it does not update the tick mark. ~~
Edited to mention that I’m a maroon
Somone forgot that you MUST set the Audio option to “Dolby Surround”, it was previously set to “Auto”. (that’s new Apple TV speak, in old speak you would specifically set the Dolby Digital Out to “On” in the Audio & Video menu.

I noticed this too, but when playing mine played with the AC3 5.1 audio (according to my ears and PlexPy).

An update on this discovery. It appears you can change the track, but the tick is not accurately appearing beside your selection (if you come out of settings, then go back, the track you tried to select is then ticked). I’d like to report this if someone can tell me where to find the OS and App version numbers.
Wow, after years of hacking ATV’s just to use Plex I am so happy to finally be able to use it as a native app. Beautiful design and performance. Congrats to @elan and team.
Sod it. Just ordered an AppleTV.
Well done @elan and team for a fast turn around. I think this more than redeems the saga of the long awaited [and finally released] iOS app update.
I also like the size of the posters, they are huge. Scrolling down is also much preferred, thanks for that. Although I do miss fanart support and hopefully that’s implemented down the road. Easily the best Plex client I have ever used already and it’s just the beginning. Feels good for the first time having my apple ecosystem, streaming services, and an official plex all in one device.
Dreams do come true
Congratulations—very nice native app.

You’re getting too forgiving ![]()
Top shelf feature on main screen is a really nice touch.

I’ve edited my post, as I had completely forgot about needing to sett the audio option on the Apple TV to Dolby Surround (pre 4th gen it was setting Dolby Digital Out to “On” in the Audio & Video menu.) This seems to have resolved my issue.
@elan (and the rest of the team). Thanks for all the effort in getting this app ready and shipped ![]()
Awesome!
