Plex App on PIxelbook not playing all audio channels on 5.1 or higher

Server Version#: 1.13.9.5456
Player Version#: Plex App 7.7.1.7663

I have a Google Pixelbook a recently noticed the Plex App is only playing the background noises on videos with 5.1 or higher sound. When I play videos with stereo sound it works fine. If I open Plex through the chrome browser it plays the audio on all videos fine.

I’ve looked for any sound settings in ChromeOS but it’s very limited so not sure how to test which channels or sound formats the system is having trouble with.

i have the exact same issue, using the Plex app it does not work, however works fine using the chrome Web app

I’m not sure which app you are referring to but our Android app is not optimized for Chrome OS. (and i don’t know that it ever will be) You need to use the web app in browser.

I hope you consider adding support for ChromeOS in the future. The Pixelbook is great and the new Google Slate is coming soon. Running Plex through the Chrome browser is a workaround for now

What a crazy limitation. Optimized? What optimization is needed. Just enable stereo audio, like every other android app device.

Same bug has existed for years on Samsung tablets.

That isn’t an Android device. It is chromeOS

Not really. I installed the Android Plex app. From the Android Play store. Just like every other Android App (Office, WebEx, Teamviewer, etc) I use from the Play store on this device.

The Plex Android app worked perfectly fine before the ~Oct update and we could hear 5.1 audio converted to stereo just fine. The android app actually runs fine now too, except for messing up the stereo audio output. Again, there isn’t any optimization needed (or change for that matter - we aren’t talking about making a ChromeOS app). Just enable the conversion to stereo output in the andoird app.

Just because you can install and android app does not make the operating system Android. Chromebooks run Chrome OS not Android.

I get it. You guys don’t want to do more work to optimize from ChromeOS devices. But we aren’t really asking for that. Besides all the major work is done (touch, display resizing, etc) and works fine. Yeah there’s a wonky “can’t use the keyboard to input the PIN”, but that’s not a biggie. And all the optimization for Android Apps on Chrome OS devices focuses on is display resizing, keyboard input, stylus, camera and default orientation. There isn’t anything about audio. I’m guessing because just like a phone, a chromebook also only has 2 audio channels.

My guess is that there is something in the plex app unrelated to chromebooks, and more related to android tablets that you can’t seem to figure out, which is why there are so many other posts about this same type of issue (5.1 audio being mixed to stereo incorrectly) for a bunch of tablet devices.

So yeah, these are chrome os devices. But the issue is with your andoid app on android devices. You can put your head in the sand and ignore it if you want, but I for one would really appreciate someone to look into this.

And for anyone else reading this, spend 30 minutes going through these links that go into detail for Android App developers to “optimize” an app for Chromebooks. None of them mention changing anything about audio, which is the issue at hand in the post.

Wow… is it just me or does this response sound rather snarky.

So glad I dropped cash on a life time Plex Pass…

I concur. Here is to hoping that one day the Plex Media Player will be supported on Chrome OS, or at least have the ability to go back to a previous release of the Plex Media Player where the audio did work correctly.

I still have not seen any documentation or disclaimer that the Plex Media Player is not supported (not optimized) for Chrome OS. In fact Google Play states that the Plex Media Player is “compatible with my device”. I guess I need to inform Google that this is not true.

Why not just use the browser?

Seriously dude? I guess I have to now, I have no choice. What a troll!

That was a legit question. I use the browser on my Chromebox.

Just an FYI - I tried the non-official Plex Android app X-Play and it experiences the same issue. This leads me to believe it is a Chrome OS issue.

My main reason is for synced content - can’t sync through the browser (as far as I know)

Thanks for the summary of the Plex Android app audio issue and how it impacts the use of the Plex Android app on Chromebooks. I hope that Plex improves their Android App to allow for stereo audio so Android and Chromebook users can enjoy the Android app (to watch downloaded content). and hear the center voice channel.

I am also having this problem on a Firestick. Presumably this is an Android-related problem. Is there a client device I can buy that plays audio correctly with PLex?
