I’ve been running my Plex server on my QNAP NAS for some time now and I have a strong IT background so when I get stumped it means I’m really stumped. I’m by no means a Plex a Plex server expert, I actually think I’m under utilizing my server but that is another topic for another time. For now It’s doing (almost) everything I want it to and doing a better job than anything else I’ve seen and/or tried.
With that said here is my issue -
I JUST got an E series 48" Vizio LED SMART TV and even though I have the QNAP connected directly via HDMI and can watch whatever I want from it without having to stream over the local network I would still like to use the Plex app on the TV because it’s just damn cool. (it makes it look like I know my stuff when the girls come over, you know what I mean)
I DL’d the app from the TV app store and it installed just fine, BUT when I try to invoke it it tries to connect blindly to whatever it can find, which is nothing because I have my Plex server secured out the wahzoo and you need creds to attach to it. There is no way to add creds to the app (or none that I can find) thus it just never connects.
Do you need a Plex Pass to make this work?
I gave my NAS it’s own identity to the internet and to Plex, it has it’s own email and various other accounts. If I do have to get a Plex Pass do I need one for my NAS or for ME or both?
I’m sure I’m over looking something simple, we’ve all done it, so I’m fully prepared for the “you didn’t do this” answer.
If I posted this in the wrong area or someone has already covered this topic I am going to go ahead in apologize in advance and ask that I be pointed in the right direction.
Also, if anyone out there with a fair amount of Plex server experience has any input on how to optimize and improve a Plex server install PLEASE feel free to hit me up. I’m am not afraid and/or opposed to someone else critiquing my work.
Thank you.
