Plex App on Xbox Live App Market

It definitely. Needs to be looked at most people own an Xbox its an instant market no need to buy new kit just install the sever it would be awesome

Mr. Chris,
If you are looking fro a solution for the original xbox check out PleXBMC. It is a plugin for XBMC that allows you to use your Plex Media Server..

The new Dash seems to show they're open to having content from just about anywhere, and a Plex client that doesn't support plugins (since most of that would compete with their official offering anyway) would very likely be approved for the app store.

If it isn't the other route might be to try implementing one in XNA and making it available through the Creators Club/Xbox Live Indy Games, but in that case I don't know if custom networking is available-and discovering XBLIG content on Live gets moredifficult with every dash update. At least XBLIG would allow Kinect interaction :)

I would buy an XBox with Connect just for Plex and I am not a gamer. I guess the Android client made it easier to put on Google 2. I wish them all the best but I wouldn’t bet the house on Google’s approach to TV. I rather like my ATV2, and hope Apple pursues it further, but Microsoft is doing some neat thing with the XBox.

I’ll say it again - there is currently no SDK that allows third-party developers to make apps for the Xbox 360

While they may not have a SDK for third-party applications, they do have the Xbox Developer Kit. You have to submit to create applications. This is the same route that people go through to create arcade applications for the Xbox platform.

I personally haven’t developed anything for the Xbox platform. However, I do use it as a streaming device, it has been great.

Edit Looks like XBL Indie Games don’t have internet connectivity…Bummer, however I do read that the Xbox does support HLS. I don’t see it being unreasonable to at least try and submit the concept for the application. I’m sure they would love to make a commission off of all the sales.

I’ve read that page before - they don’t mention apps for the 360 anywhere. They talk about both apps and games for Windows Phone, but very specifically only mention games for the 360.

You overestimate the reach of Plex over say DLNA. XBox sales seem to be doing fine as is. In any case why would someone use a high energy appliance when you can get a player that uses virtually none? For me it would be the Kinect interface that appeals, but other than that I would never use an XBox or any other game machine as a media player.

Philip

i dunno about canadian energy prices, but if you take a look at the poll, that hardly seems to be a concern anyone shares with you. Im all for preserving the enviroment, but i hardly think nature takes a bigger hit by the added power used by an xbox than it does from the production of, say another atv2. I for one, think plex for the 360 would be amazing. The install base is huge.

Seems there are a lot of questions and only a handful of answers, here’s what I *know.

It is possible to develop games for Xbox 360 with their released “XDK” (I hate the name as much as you do). Their IDE is called “XNA Game Studio” and is used to create games for Windows Phone, Xbox 360, and PC. The tool is also complete with an "emulator (we’re using the term loosely here, it really just compiles the game against similar libraries developed for the PC that provide most of the same functionality). Once games go through a peer review process they can be downloaded by other users through the “Xbox Live Indie Marketplace”… and here comes the bad news

The provided libraries do not give you any control of network access. All network access is abstracted away under a NetworkSession and NetworkGamer object (NetworkGamer). In order to make game development easier for you (and likely to protect against malicious/naughty apps) the libraries manage all network access. IMO (as unprofessional as my opinion is) this pretty much kills this idea. If someone knows the API better, please speak up. Aside from that, the whole system is really only designed for games, and anything that doesn’t fit that mold would likely be removed.

If you really wanted Plex content playing through the XBOX360, your best bet would probably be a Windows 7 Media Center plugin that’s extender safe (no silverlight or flash). This option would require the XBOX be on the same network as a always-running Windows 7 box with WMC, but I think this may be the case for a good chunk of the Windows PMS users.

Honestly, this wouldn’t be a terrible thing to develop anyway. I’m sure you could find a few users who want to use plex on WMC without the 360 (say those who already watch live TV with it) that don’t want to have to minimize and open Plex. Could be a sort of two birds, one stone deal.

Hope some of that info helps.

So I’m a total newb enjoying the fruits of your labor (thanks so much for your hard work!). I’m running a vortexbox that has plex and serviio on it. Serviio is seen by both my ps3 and the 360. Could plex run the same way? PMS has a much nicer interface than serviio.

Ok, bit of a newbe here and may be missing something rather basic… but why not just present Plex’s metadata as a DLNA stream to the Xbox 360? The actual data files are presented as a fileshare. Same as other media servers do (e.g. TMS (rhymes with wonky)).

This method seems to allow Xbox, Western Digital and other DLNA receivers to easily consume the data.

I like the Roku app and all - it makes for an excellent browsing experience. But for platforms where you can’t (it’s really difficult) to install local code on use the tools they already have.

Please don’t flame - just thinking out loud here.

Funny enough, I was thinking about this the other day. I was thinking of a secondary app (outside of Plex). The app is in itself a plex client, that’s acts as an adapter between the PMS/XML to UPnP. . The app basically advertises itself as a UPnP compatible server, delegating requests to the PMS, and generating UPnP formatted responses (using the Platinum UPnP library (http://www.plutinosoft.com/platinum)). There’s a LOT to flush out though, would be interested to hear what others thought

Sort of like screen-scraping the PLEX client, but presenting the GUI through an alternate framework? Citrix-esque? Or similar to the Flash–>HTML5 transforms a lot of sites are doing? I could see some benefit to being able to view/use Plex through a purely HTML interface.

I could see doing that to enable PLEX through a browser-only platform, but for something like the Xbox, I wonder if it’s really necessary…

I would like to see PMS to be able to be installed as a windows system service rather than as a console app. But, that’s not apart of this thread…

If you guys have not had a chance go to youtube and look at the tekhd channel for plex at ces2012. They have an Xbox 360 in the background in a stack of other devices… we could be closer then we thought

Sounds like UPnP DNLA may have been announced… very happy to hear!

This would be awesome.

I’d happily pay $10 or possibly more if this app existed. It would render devices like Roku redundant and already supports 1080p & a wide range of codecs.

Everybody here who has twitter and wants this done. Send Plex app requests to @xbox include @plexapp in the discussion and add finish the request with #plexonxbox time to start the movement. What do we want? Plex on xbox 360. When do we want it now!

+1 for plex on Xbox 360
