I never used PLEX before and I heard many good things about it. So when I read that PLEX was coming to the XB1, I was very excited since I have a large library of movies on my NAS.
Unfortunately my NAS doesnt support PLEX, so I had to install the PLEX server on a spare machine that's on all the time and then point the server to the NAS. I was curious, will there be a day when the PLEX client will not require a PLEX server to view the media files that are on a NAS?
Another thing about the XB1 app, will there be a free version of of the app. The current app requires one to get a PLEX Pass, which obviously has a cost. The Pass is great and all, but I dont require all the features that comes with the Pass. I did get one month of service just so I can try it out, but again, I just want to be able play my media through the app when I'm at home. I have no need for on-the-road viewing or any other features.
The plex app will be available for a one time fee eventually. Plexpass works as kind of a beta preview program. You get the new features first. I don’t enough about nas servers to answer your other question.
The Server is an integral component in the Plex experience, particularly with the ability to play your media on practically every type of device (i.e. transcoding). Get rid of that and it becomes just another video player that's limited by the codecs supported by the device it's installed on. We'd be going back to the caveman days of converting our files into the different formats supported by each of our devices.
Well this is funny. Right after my post here, I was searching more PLEX info on my NAS and there's actually a firmware update that adds on PLEX support. Doing this now and hopefully all goes well.
