Plex Appears as 'Remote' on Local Network - Plusnet Router/ISP

We’ve switched to Plusnet ISP here in the UK and ever since then, I’ve noticed my Plex Media Server (running on an nVIDIA Shield TV) always appears as a ‘Remote’ device on the web app on the PC and on other devices. If I use the Servers IP address to open the settings, it does come up as ‘Nearby’ but Chrome tells me the connection is not secure.

I’ve followed instructions to port forward the ports for Plex on my router (Plusnet Hub 1) but this haven’t resolved the issue. I’ve also used set DNS addresses on the Shield TV to point to Google’s public DNS (as reccommended on one post due to DNS rebinding) and this didn’t resolve this issue either.

I can access Plex remotely away from my home network, but want it to saits nearby when I’m on my own home network.

I’ve also installed Plex Media Server on my PC to do a test and that also has the same issue of appearing as ‘Remote’ on my own home network even on the PC its running on!

Can anyone advise? Thanks

Can anyone advise? Had a few issues streaming at my parents house today when I tried watching a film from my Plex server

Can anyone advise? Thanks

  1. Verify that Plex port 32400 is forwarded properly; try pinging it via your web browser by using any available online ‘scan tool’.

  2. Add your PC’s IP address to the - Plex Server --> Network --> LAN Networks list ( list IP addresses or IP/netmask entries for networks that will be considered to be on the local network). For LocalHost, add this address to the list: 127.0.0.1

Bumping because I have same issue and others, too: see here
DNS rebinding and firewalls/NAT should not affect your local LAN unless you are an office with zerotrust / segmented networks or use a VPN.

Easy check:
can you open the server dashboard and check what happens when you (with another computer/browser) go to
https://[your server’s LAN IP]:32400/web

does the connection show as “remote” or “local” ?
( left is remote, right is local )
